Rodri's Early Exit Rocks Man City's Title Hopes After Brentford Clash

Manchester City secured a vital 1-0 Premier League victory against Brentford, but the win was significantly overshadowed by an early injury to pivotal midfielder Rodri. The Spanish international was forced off the pitch just 20 minutes into the clash at the Gtech Stadium, visibly upset after appearing to sustain a hamstring injury. He was eventually helped off the field, replaced by fellow Spaniard Nico Gonzalez, leaving manager Pep Guardiola to express concern, stating, "He is injured, he felt something, but hopefully it will not be huge. It looks like a hamstring but we don't know the damage yet."
This incident adds to a troubling history of injuries for Rodri. He previously endured a devastating anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury in his right knee, which also affected his meniscus, suffered in a Premier League clash with Arsenal in September 2024. This long-term issue had seen him miss 53 games for club and country over 236 days. Prior to that, he had missed three City games over 43 days due to a hamstring problem, raising fears of a recurrence of the same issue. Furthermore, Rodri has already sat out two matches this season with knee issues. Guardiola has been carefully managing Rodri's fitness, having played an hour in a recent Champions League draw in Monaco after sitting out two previous fixtures. The manager warned that it could take most of the season, potentially until the next World Cup, for Rodri to fully regain his peak form following his lengthy ACL recovery, stating, "The body changes, the rhythm changes. It's a question of time." The text also refers to Rodri as the "2024 Ballon d’Or winner".
Despite the setback of Rodri's injury, Erling Haaland emerged as the decisive factor for Manchester City. The Norwegian super-striker netted an early goal in the ninth minute, marking an impressive personal best of his ninth consecutive game scoring for club and country. This feat surpasses his previous best of eight consecutive goals, achieved twice before for City/Norway in 2022 and Borussia Dortmund/Norway 12 months prior.
Haaland's match-winning strike demonstrated immense confidence. He expertly wrestled off his marker and hammered the ball past goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher. The goal saw him shrug off Sepp van den Berg "like he was a 6ft4ins rag doll" and capitalize on Nathan Collins' bewildering failure to intervene. This crucial effort secured Pep Guardiola's 250th Premier League win and highlighted Haaland's critical importance to City's title aspirations, with the team looking heavily dependent on his lethal finishing if he remains fit.
City largely dominated the first half, though they were perhaps fortunate to only be one goal ahead at the break. Brentford improved considerably in the second half, creating opportunities, with striker Igor Thiago and Michael Kayode threatening. Phil Foden, despite being snubbed for the England squad, also had several decent chances to extend City's lead, including one laid back by Oscar Bobb, but skewed his shot wide. Ultimately, City managed to see out the game, securing three vital points that propel them back into a strong position in the league race, now three points behind Arsenal, while eagerly awaiting news from their medical team regarding Rodri's condition during the international break.
