Rock Royalty Unites for Spinal Tap Tribute Album, Benefiting Teen Cancer America!

The legendary, albeit fictional, rock band Spinal Tap is making a very real impact through its music, as a new compilation album is raising crucial funds for Teen Cancer America. This non-profit organization, co-founded by The Who’s Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend, is dedicated to running specialized cancer programs for adolescents and young adults aged 15-39, addressing the unique challenges faced by this age group.
Titled “The Majesty of Rock,” the 32-song collection delves deep into the Spinal Tap catalog, featuring iconic tracks such as “Sex Farm,” “(Listen to the) Flower People,” “Hell Hole,” and “Big Bottom.” What makes this project truly special is the star-studded lineup of musicians who have lent their talents, hailing from legendary groups including Guns N’ Roses, Foo Fighters, The Go-Go’s, and Tool, among many others.
In a nod to Spinal Tap’s satirical spirit, many of the contributing artists formed unique, often humorously named, fake bands for their performances. For instance, Vixen’s Britt Lightning created The Lightning Rods, Guns N’ Roses’ Dizzy Reed contributed with a group dubbed Jason Achilles, and System of a Down’s John Dolmayan played alongside Antenna the End. One particularly notable collaboration for “Big Bottom” features the band S.S.R.J.C.T., an acronym derived from the first initials of its members' last names: Troy Sanders (Mastodon), Kellii Scott (Failure), Scott Reeder (Kyuss), Rami Jaffee (Foo Fighters), Justin Chancellor (Tool), and Abby Travis (The Go-Go’s). The compilation also includes a heartfelt contribution from the Play it Back Players, a band composed of cancer patients performing alongside professional musicians who generously volunteer their time.
The creation of “The Majesty of Rock” was spearheaded by journalist and podcaster Marc Shea, an endeavor that took three and a half years to bring to fruition after an initial conversation on his podcast, "Performance Anxiety." Shea expressed his gratitude, stating, “Three and a half years later, we have a double album to honor the musical and comedic legacy of Spinal Tap, the band that gave us ‘going to 11’ as well as raising awareness for spontaneous combustion.” He further thanked the contributors and Teen Cancer America for their support.
Only 5,000 digital copies of this exclusive compilation are available for purchase, requiring a minimum donation of $19.84. This specific amount serves as a clever homage to the year 1984, when the iconic mockumentary "This Is Spinal Tap" was originally released. Shannon Sullivan, Executive Director of Teen Cancer America, highlighted the album's impact: “This tribute album is a fun, powerful way to raise crucial funds and awareness for the unique challenges facing this age group. We are incredibly grateful to the brilliant artists who have lent their talents to this project and to the creators of Spinal Tap for allowing us to celebrate their genius for a cause that is so important.” Through this unique blend of music, humor, and philanthropy, "The Majesty of Rock" not only celebrates Spinal Tap's enduring legacy but also provides vital support to young people battling cancer.
