Robots Unleashed: Google Makes Major Industrial AI Play Official

In a significant strategic maneuver, Alphabet-owned Intrinsic, a company dedicated to building AI models and software for making industrial robotics more accessible, officially joined Google on February 25. This integration is not merely an internal reshuffle but rather a calculated bet by Google on the future of industrial AI. Intrinsic will maintain its distinct group identity within Google, operating in close collaboration with Google DeepMind and leveraging both Gemini AI models and Google Cloud infrastructure. No purchase price for this internal transfer was publicly disclosed.
Intrinsic's journey began with five years of intensive development within Alphabet’s X, the renowned moonshot research division that also fostered innovations like Waymo and Wing. In 2021, it graduated to become an independent Alphabet-owned entity. From its inception, Intrinsic's mission has been to democratize industrial robotics AI, making it accessible to manufacturers who may not possess extensive teams of specialist engineers. The challenge it addresses is the inherent complexity of programming robotic arms; while the hardware has become more affordable, the software aspect often demands hundreds of hours of manual coding by highly specialized professionals, varying significantly depending on the specific robot model.
To overcome this hurdle, Intrinsic developed Flowstate, a pioneering web-based platform designed to enable users to construct robotic applications without the need to write thousands of lines of code. This platform boasts a design that is agnostic to specific hardware, software, and AI models, functioning more as an overarching operating layer. Its strategic importance was underscored by Google CEO Sundar Pichai, who reportedly compared Flowstate directly to Android, highlighting its potential to become the foundational operating system for robotics, much as Android is for mobile devices.
The timing of Intrinsic's absorption into Google’s core operations is far from arbitrary, reflecting a deliberate consolidation of robotics capabilities. This move follows a sequence of key actions, including the hiring of Boston Dynamics’ former CTO and the release of a standalone robotics SDK. Together, these steps strategically position Google to offer manufacturers an unparalleled, cleanly integrated solution: advanced AI models from DeepMind, robust deployment software from Intrinsic, and scalable cloud infrastructure from Google Cloud—all unified under one technological umbrella. Further demonstrating this synergy, Google recently partnered with Boston Dynamics to integrate Gemini into its Atlas humanoid robots designed for manufacturing environments, a collaboration reinforced by Google DeepMind’s recruitment of Boston Dynamics’ former CTO in November.
Google is targeting a substantial market. McKinsey projects that the global market for general-purpose robots could expand significantly, potentially reaching US$370 billion by 2040. For enterprise decision-makers, the most compelling aspect of this development is not just the underlying technology, but the profound shift towards accessibility it represents. Google's strategy involves integrating Intrinsic’s robotics development platform and vision models deeply within its broader AI ecosystem. This integration aims to combine sophisticated reasoning, perception, and learning capabilities with industrial-grade robotics software, enabling machines to more effectively interpret sensor data, adapt fluidly to dynamic environments, and execute highly complex tasks with greater autonomy.
Intrinsic’s growth trajectory has also included strategic expansions, notably the acquisition of Open Source Robotics Corp. in 2022, which was the for-profit arm of the foundation behind the widely adopted Robot Operating System (ROS). Moreover, its commercial pipeline is already demonstrating tangible progress; in October 2025, Intrinsic forged a significant strategic partnership with Foxconn, with a primary focus on developing general-purpose intelligent robots specifically for full factory automation within the demanding electronics manufacturing sector.
Intrinsic CEO Wendy Tan White articulated the implications of this integration in terms that enterprise leaders will find compelling: enhanced production economics, transformative operational efficiencies, and the realization of truly advanced manufacturing. She emphasized that these advancements are now within reach, given the full backing of Google’s extensive infrastructure. This is a bold claim, but with the combined power of Gemini, DeepMind, and Google Cloud now aligned behind Intrinsic, the robust infrastructure required to support such ambitious goals is, for the first time, definitively in place.
