Robin Hood Creators Spill Secrets on Season 1's Grim End and Future Plans

MGM+'s fresh take on the iconic folk hero, Robin Hood, wrapped up its critically acclaimed freshman season with an explosive finale, leaving audiences on tenterhooks. The slow-burning conflict involving Rob (Jack Patton), the Sheriff of Nottingham (Sean Bean), and the Earl of Huntingdon (Steven Waddington) reached a devastating climax, with severe consequences for all involved parties. Ahead of the Season 1 finale, series co-creators John Glenn and Jonathan English, who also penned the episode, delved into the shocking demises of Huntingdon and Guy of Gisborne (Davor Tomic), Marian's (Lauren McQueen) integral role in her father's death, and the unique almost-love triangle between Rob, Marian, and Ralph (Erica Ford). While an official Season 2 renewal is pending, the creators also offered glimpses into potential future plotlines, including Priscilla's (Lydia Peckham) life at the convent following her unexpected pregnancy, the fate of the outlaws after their temporary disbandment, and the evolving relationship between Rob and Marian.
A key goal for the creators in the Season 1 finale was to establish a new status quo for the outlaws. Rather than retreating deeper into the forest, the outlaws disperse, returning to ordinary lives to hide in plain sight or moving into larger cities to evade authorities. This unique approach, according to John Glenn, allows for individual character growth outside the group before they reunite in Season 2. Jonathan English emphasized that this dispersal enables the characters to revert to being individuals rather than just a mass of outlaws, providing richer opportunities for their reintroduction.
Regarding a potential time jump in Season 2, Glenn confirmed that both elements would be present. The season is designed to begin with a time jump, showing characters in different lives and with pre-existing growth between seasons, followed by further character development and intricate storylines throughout Season 2 itself. The creators expressed significant excitement for these planned developments.
One of the most surprising character deaths in the finale was Guy of Gisborne, a figure often prominent in other Robin Hood adaptations. Jonathan English explained that the decision to introduce and then kill off Gisborne was to amplify the stakes for the end of Season 1. By bringing in a notorious, well-known name as a formidable antagonist, it became more believable that he could challenge and even usurp the Sheriff, thus raising the tension effectively leading into the finale.
The death of the Earl of Huntingdon was another pivotal moment, especially given Marian's active participation. The creators deliberately crafted a Marian who is unlike previous adaptations, with her own believable storyline for the time period. Her decision to be part of her father's demise was crucial, not just for its emotional weight, but because it signified her commitment to Rob, choosing to die with him rather than live apart from him, facing Huntingdon, who was portrayed as an exceptionally resilient foe. Glenn and English highlighted the raw and intense portrayal of this moment, describing it as an ugly, challenging act of a child killing a father, which was executed cinematically and poetically by the actors, particularly Steve Waddington.
The character of Ralph introduced an unexpected, not-quite love triangle, primarily serving Ralph's own growth and evolution. John Glenn elaborated that Ralph's storyline focuses on her finding and unlocking her femininity while in hiding, showcasing the
