Robert Pattinson's 'Batman' Sequel: Filming Updates and Star's Fiery Response to Body Critics

Robert Pattinson, set to reprise his role as Bruce Wayne/Batman in director Matt Reeves’ highly anticipated sequel “The Batman: Part II,” recently shared insights into his intense preparation and the film’s production. Speaking to GQ magazine, Pattinson revealed he had a home gym installed to ensure he packed on sufficient muscle, addressing criticisms from some viewers of 2022’s “The Batman” who found his superhero physique underwhelming. He quipped, “I worked out every fucking day,” and even twice a day at early hours, attributing past perceptions to a previous interview where he claimed exercise was “uncool.”
Despite his rigorous training, Pattinson admitted to a lack of detailed information regarding the sequel’s filming schedule. He learned of “11 weeks of nights” from a stunt guy, expressing surprise that no official schedule had been sent to him. This long-awaited film, originally slated for an earlier release, has experienced several delays but is now confirmed to have cameras rolling, targeting an October 1, 2027 release date.
Pattinson’s training for “The Batman: Part II” likely felt less arduous compared to his experience filming Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey.” He described it as one of the most exhausting sets he’s ever worked on. The shoot, which included scenes with Anne Hathaway and Tom Holland, took place at the Castello di Santa Caterina on the island of Favignana in western Sicily. The location demanded that cast and crew daily ascend a 900-foot path, with a helicopter used for those unable to walk and for transporting heavy production equipment. Nolan corroborated the intensity, noting the crew’s exhaustion even early in the production, highlighting how physically demanding the remote location was.
“The Batman: Part II” is distinguished as an “Elseworlds” film, operating independently from James Gunn’s new DCU banner, which is preparing for other releases like “Supergirl” and “Clayface” in 2026. Matt Reeves returns to direct, working from a script he co-wrote with Mattson Tomlin, Bill Finger, and Bob Kane.
The ensemble cast for the sequel includes several returning stars and new additions. Robert Pattinson leads as Bruce Wayne/The Batman, joined by Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner Gordon and Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth. Marvel veterans Sebastian Stan and Scarlett Johansson are set to play key roles as Harvey and Gilda Dent, respectively, with “Game of Thrones” veteran Charles Dance portraying their father, Christopher Dent. Colin Farrell is confirmed to return as The Penguin, and Brian Tyree Henry has been cast in an undisclosed role. The start of filming confirms that the production has ample time to meet its planned 2027 release.
