Rivers on Edge: Impeachment Battle Rages as Court Intervenes in Fubara's Fate

Rivers State is currently embroiled in a profound political crisis marked by persistent impeachment moves against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his Deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu. This escalating tension has led to significant legal interventions and shifting political alliances, dominating the state's governance landscape.
A Rivers State High Court in Oyigbo issued an interim order on Friday, temporarily halting all actions related to the impeachment proceedings for seven days. The order specifically restrained the Chief Judge, Justice Simeon Amadi, the Martins Amaewhule-led House of Assembly, and its clerk from receiving, forwarding, considering, or acting on any request for constituting a panel to investigate alleged misconduct against the governor and his deputy. Justice Fiberesima, in a ruling on two separate suits by Fubara and Odu, also granted leave for substituted service of the interim order and originating processes at the Rivers State Assembly quarter gate and the Chief Judge’s chambers. The case has been adjourned to January 23, 2026, for further hearing.
Despite the court's directive, the State House of Assembly has remained resolute in its pursuit of impeachment. The lawmakers formally requested Justice Amadi to empanel a seven-member body to investigate allegations against Fubara and Odu, citing compliance with Section 188(4) and (5) of the Constitution. In a notable development, four lawmakers who had initially advocated for an amicable settlement—Sylvanus Nwankwo, Peter Abbey, Barile Nwakoh, and Emilia Amadi—made a U-turn and rejoined their colleagues in the impeachment effort.
