Rivers LG Poll Sparks Outrage: Critics Slam Election as 'Rascality' and 'State Capture'!

Recent local government elections in Rivers State have ignited a fierce debate, drawing both staunch defense and strong condemnation from various political factions. While the All Progressives Congress (APC) was declared victorious in 20 out of the 23 Local Government Areas by the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), the outcome in Obio-Akpor Local Government Area became a particular focal point of contention and discussion.
Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), openly mocked his critics over the election results, particularly defending the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) win in Obio-Akpor, his home local government. He stated that he influenced the election’s outcome in his local government, where PDP candidate Gift Worlu secured a significant 328,823 votes. During his monthly media parley in Abuja, Wike justified the high vote count, explaining that residents of Obio-Akpor take local elections, especially for councilorship, with utmost seriousness. He described them as community or family affairs that inherently draw a large turnout, urging critics to study the area's election history and citing his own record as a two-term chairman and governor of the area, where he broke historical precedents.
Wike further addressed those who questioned why his influence did not extend to other local governments where the APC dominated. He highlighted his role as a PDP member who campaigned for his party in his local government, leading to their victory. He retorted that critics were angry that he “didn’t extend my influence in the other local government I didn’t have,” suggesting that each election has its own perception and questioning the overall satisfaction with the PDP and whether the party even contested in all the areas won by the APC.
However, the conduct and outcome of the elections did not go unchallenged. The Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP), through its National Secretary Peter Ameh, vehemently condemned the exercise. Speaking on Channels Television, Ameh described the elections as a “pure act of state capture” and an insult to collective sensibility, arguing that it fundamentally undermined the democratic process. He expressed disappointment in Governor Fubara, suggesting he had been “beaten to surrender” and that “all instrumentalities of the state were deployed against him,” which he deemed detrimental to Nigerian democracy.
Adding a powerful voice to the condemnation, Peter Obi, the Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 election, described the Rivers State local government election as “a desecration of democracy” and a “dangerous precedent for governance in Nigeria.” In a statement via his X handle, Obi strongly faulted the election process, particularly highlighting that it was supervised by a Sole Administrator whose appointment was itself controversial and illegal. He argued that such actions stripped the people of their constitutional right to choose their leaders, thereby entrenching illegality. Obi characterized the conduct as “rascality taken too far” and an “outright desecration of its very foundation,” asserting that “illegality can never give birth to legitimacy.” He urged Nigeria to uphold the sanctity of the ballot and safeguard the people’s right to choose, emphasizing that true leadership must flow from the people’s mandate, not from “contraptions that mock democracy,” to restore trust between leaders and the populace.
