- Suspects linked to the torching of Mawego Police Station over Albert Ojwang's murder have been arraigned.

On Tuesday, July 8, seven prime suspects linked to the July 3, 2025, arson attack and malicious property damage at Mawego Police Station were arraigned before the Oyugis Law Courts by detectives from Rachuonyo North Sub-County.

The investigators arraigned; Oluoch, Nicholas Otieno, Tofiq Owiti Mohamed, Michael Omondi Opiyo, David Bill Clinton Otieno, Robert Ouko Abala, and Samuel Ouma Odhiambo.

According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the seven suspects are the ringleaders behind the coordinated attack, carried out in collaboration with other accomplices who remain at large.

The court granted detectives a seven-day custodial order to allow for the completion of ongoing investigations.

In a statement, the DCI said they are still searching for more suspects who are suspected to have taken part in the incident.

"Detectives are pursuing more leads to apprehend additional suspects believed to have participated in the attack," DCI said.

As reported earlier, the torching of the Mawego Police Station in Kabondo Kasipul constituency stole the limelight when the body of the late teacher and blogger was being taken home.

Ojwang died at the Central Police Station hours after he was arrested and taken to Mawego Police Station by DCI detectives.

During his funeral procession, hundreds of angry protesters took his body to the station and set it on fire.

In a video that went viral on social media, the youth, carrying Ojwang's casket high, were seen occupying the compound and setting some of the structures on fire.

Some of the officers would then resurface to salvage a bit of the property they could from the raging fire.

Later, Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma claimed the burning of the station was done by goons from outside Homa Bay county.

The vocal ODM lawmaker asserted that the Homa Bay youth were too reticent to partake in such an act.

Meanwhile, new reports emerged that ODM leader Raila Odinga was warned against attending Ojwang's burial ceremony.

According to Ojwang’s cousin, Jane Adeya, the burial committee advised Raila to skip the funeral, fearing backlash from enraged mourners, particularly the youth.

Adeya disclosed that enraged youths had planned to heckle the former prime minister at the burial ceremony.

The youths had vowed only to listen to Embakasi South MP Babu Owino.
