Rigathi Gachagua's Fiery Return Fuels Political Turmoil and Media Outcry

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has re-emerged as a combative figure in Kenyan politics, positioning himself as the face of the Opposition against his former boss, President William Ruto. This re-emergence follows a year after his removal from office amid accusations of gross misconduct, irregular wealth acquisition, insubordination, and fanning ethnic divisions. Gachagua had spent a 43-day trip in the United States, where he openly criticized the Kenyan government, citing concerns over corruption, extrajudicial killings, and human rights violations.
His return to Kenya on August 21, 2025, was highly anticipated and strategically timed to coincide with a series of by-elections, setting the stage for his first direct political contest with President Ruto ahead of the 2027 general election. Gachagua's Democratic Congress Party (DCP) allies had promoted his homecoming as a monumental event, planning what they called the 'mother of all peaceful processions' from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) to the Nairobi central business district, culminating in a public rally at the symbolic Kamukunji Grounds.
Upon his arrival at JKIA at 1 p.m., Gachagua was received by DCP Deputy Party Leader Cleophas Malala, Nyandarua Senator John Methu, and other supporters. While one observer noted a seemingly unhindered initial entry into the city, with riot police officers visible in proper uniform and no immediate sight of goons, and even a sarcastic nod to a hovering police chopper as a sign of 'political maturity,' the subsequent procession proved to be anything but peaceful.
As Gachagua's convoy made its way along Mombasa Road, what was intended as a peaceful political procession rapidly descended into chaos. Police fired tear gas, and stones were hurled at the motorcade, leading to the dispersal of crowds. Security forces maintained a heavy presence along the route, forcing the convoy to divert several times. By the time allies like Malala, Methu, Embakasi North MP James Gakuya, and Kirinyaga Woman Representative Njeri Maina addressed supporters at a stopover, Gachagua himself was conspicuously absent, his whereabouts unclear, though allies vowed to escort him to his Karen home.
The planned public rally at Kamukunji Grounds ultimately failed to materialize without Gachagua’s presence. His allies vehemently accused the government of frustrating the event, with Cleophas Malala claiming police were deployed to block Gachagua's reception and planned arrests. Senator John Methu declared Gachagua's camp unbowed, stating, 'William Ruto, you have tested our resilience, but we are unbowed and we shall fight on.' Njeri Maina accused the president of sending goons and then arresting youths, vowing to defend 'Gen Zs.' Senator Joe Nyutu further appealed to the international community to 'rescue Kenya from Kasongo,' alleging a helicopter was coordinating goons while affirming Gachagua's continued leadership.
The chaotic events also saw severe attacks on journalists covering the homecoming. Reporters from Standard Group, Royal Media Services (RMS), and TV47 were assaulted, robbed, and had their equipment destroyed by goons, with some requiring hospital treatment. Supporters of the DCP were also targeted. These acts drew strong condemnation from the Media Council of Kenya and former Chief Justice David Maraga. The Media Council called for a thorough investigation by the Inspector General of Police to bring perpetrators to justice, emphasizing that the assault undermined press freedom. Maraga criticized the government for allowing armed groups to attack citizens and journalists while security forces failed to act, stating that President Ruto's 'continued use of armed militias against citizens' threatened national safety and eroded public trust in state institutions. He urged an urgent confrontation of this lawlessness.
The events surrounding Gachagua's return underscore the escalating political tensions in Kenya, marking a significant moment in the ongoing power dynamics between the former Deputy President and the current President, as both camps brace for future political contests.
