Revealed: 'Cross' Season 2 Stars Dive Deep into Episode 6's Intense Pool Fight

Season 2 of the Prime Video series Cross delves deeper into the complex dynamics between its characters, particularly FBI Agent Kayla Craig (Alona Tal) and former police officer turned prisoner Bobby Trey (Johnny Ray Gill), as well as Kayla's evolving relationship with Detective Alex Cross (Aldis Hodge). The season continues to follow Kayla as she works to protect businessman Lance Durand (Matthew Lillard) from the vengeful vigilante Luz (Jeanine Mason), all while navigating her professional and personal entanglements.
Kayla Craig's decision to enlist Bobby Trey for "questionable tasks" is highlighted as a calculated risk, one that she, according to Alona Tal, understood immediately. Bobby Trey, however, views Kayla as an "agent of chaos" and a representative of a system he fundamentally disagrees with. Johnny Ray Gill drew parallels between some of Kayla's actions and historical injustices like the Tuskegee experiments, underscoring Bobby Trey's critical perspective on institutions, especially concerning the care of military personnel. Despite his moral objections to the system Kayla embodies, Bobby Trey appears to relish his involvement in these tasks, embodying a "no regrets" philosophy and describing his life as living "amongst the tornadoes."
Bobby Trey's character is portrayed as a compelling mix of "mad genius and completely insane," making him highly unpredictable. Johnny Ray Gill explained that Bobby Trey operates within his own narrative, largely unconcerned with how others perceive him. While aware of the effects of his actions, his motivations are deeply calculated rather than driven by external validation. Gill meticulously crafted Bobby Trey, drawing inspiration from his Shreveport, Louisiana roots, military background, detective experience, and his personal quest to reclaim his family’s land. He even conceptualized the character using capitalism as a metaphor, resulting in a charming, cunning, psychotic, and ruthless individual. Alona Tal noted that Johnny Ray Gill's distinctive personal style and flair also subtly influenced Bobby Trey's unique on-screen persona.
The second season also explores the deepening personal relationship between Kayla and Alex Cross. Alona Tal described this exploration as both "painful" and "enjoyable," as it allowed for peeling back layers of a complicated dynamic. The challenge and intrigue lay in observing how two individuals who connect profoundly on a psychological profiler level navigate a romantic involvement. Tal particularly enjoyed Kayla's "foot-in-mouth moments," such as her awkward "Go get ‘em, tiger" comment. She highlighted these instances as crucial for adding humor and relatability to characters who deal with inherently dark subject matter, creating a compelling juxtaposition that makes them more well-rounded and interesting.
A memorable physical confrontation in episode six features Kayla in a "scrappy" fight with Felicia (Amanda Brooks) around a pool. Alona Tal expressed her enthusiasm for these physical scenes, desiring more opportunities to showcase Kayla's ability to get "scrappy when she has to." Johnny Ray Gill echoed this sentiment, finding the fight scene one of his favorite days on set. He appreciated the "down and dirty" realism of the combat, especially noting the strong portrayal of women fighting. The scene also featured the iconic line, "Bye, Felicia," which Tal acknowledged as "low-hanging fruit" but one she was happy to "eat," suggesting the writers might have even named the character Felicia to set up this very moment. This fight scene, alongside the intricate character developments, contributes to the multi-layered storytelling of Cross Season 2, which is available to stream on Prime Video.
