Despite both Resident Evil 7 and Village being first-person games, Resident Evil 9 will reportedly buck that trend and be played in third-person like the recent Resi remakes.
Ever since Capcom finally started hitting on all cylinders with Resident Evil, there's been a clear pattern when it comes to games in the series. Starting with Resident Evil 7 and its big reinvention of the series, mainline games with a number at the end have all been in first-person, while the remakes of Resident Evil 2, 3, and 4 have all had third-person perspectives.

The only thing stopping people from playing the first remake is their willingness to engage with it! Give it a shot!
While Resident Evil 9 hasn't been officially announced yet (although Capcom has confirmed that it's working on a new game), most of us have assumed that the next game is in fact a numbered title. Considering the pattern that the series has followed for nearly a decade now, that has made it seem likely that Resident Evil 9 would follow in Resi 7 and Village's footsteps and be first-person.
Surprisingly, it seems that might not be the case at all. Resident Evil insider Dusk Golem (also known as AestheticGamer1) recently took to Twitter to address some of the rumours that have been swirling around about Resident Evil 9, including suggesting Leon Kennedy is coming back. In a recent tweet, Dusk was asked whether the current version of Resident Evil 9 will be first-person or third-person.
While it's worth taking what Dusk Golem says with a grain of salt until it's confirmed, it's worth noting that he's proven to have knowledge on Resident Evil several times in the past.
In response, Dusk Golem said that Resident Evil 9 is "definitely" a third-person game and was designed as such from the moment it first started development. The insider went on to say that he's heard "murmurs in the grapevine" that it might be primarily third-person with an optional first-person camera, similarly to the Gold edition of Resident Evil Village.
Dusk notes that rumour isn't from one of his sources, but that it's something he's been hearing about for a while now. That part of the rumour may be shaky, but Dusk still says that Resident Evil 9 is "for sure" third-person, something that should make everyone asking for a new game like the remakes very happy.
