Real Madrid Appoints Xabi Alonso as New Manager

Real Madrid has officially announced the appointment of Xabi Alonso as their new manager, succeeding Carlo Ancelotti, who has taken on the role of head coach for the Brazilian national team. Alonso's contract will span three seasons, from June 1, 2025, to June 30, 2028.

The announcement highlighted Alonso's legendary status at Real Madrid and in world football. During his tenure as a player from 2009 to 2014, he made 236 appearances, contributing significantly to the team's success. He won six titles, including the coveted La Décima (the club's tenth UEFA Champions League title), one European Super Cup, one La Liga title, two Copa del Rey titles, and one Spanish Super Cup.

Alonso's achievements with the Spanish national team were also lauded. He played in 114 international matches, winning the 2010 World Cup and two European Championships (2008 and 2012).

Before his appointment, Alonso gained managerial experience at Real Madrid's academy, leading the U12 side to a league title and the Torneo de Campeones in 2018-2019. More recently, he managed Bayer Leverkusen, guiding them to their first-ever Bundesliga title without losing a game. He also secured the German Cup, marking a successful first full season as a senior club manager in the 2023-24 campaign, in addition to the German Super Cup.

Alonso’s formal introduction as the new Real Madrid coach will take place on May 26 at Real Madrid City. His first major challenge with Real Madrid will be the Club World Cup in the US, with his first game against Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal on June 18.

Real Madrid has already been proactive in the transfer market, signing defender Dean Huijsen and with expectations of Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold joining before the Club World Cup. These moves indicate a strategic effort to strengthen the squad under Alonso's leadership.
