Red Sox Hint at New Potential First Base Solution Involving Top Prospect
The Boston Red Sox have a problem at first base after losing Triston Casas for the remainder of the 2025 season.
During this week's three-game sweep, which came at the hands of the AL-leading Detroit Tigers, Boston rotated Nick Sogard and Abraham Toro at first. Notably, neither has a batting average over .215.

The issue isn't available talent at the plate. The issue is that all of the Red Sox's best hitters play similar positions.
Having said that, Boston appeared to be working on a new solution for that positional logjam on May 16.

MLB.com Red Sox beat writer Ian Browne shared video of breakout prospect Kristian Campbell getting some work in at first base on Friday afternoon.
This is a pretty key development for Boston if a potential Campbell position change were to stick. Not only would it fill the hole at first base, but the creative move would also allow the Red Sox to call up fellow top prospect Marcelo Mayer.
With Rafael Devers making it clear that first base is not in his repertoire, and veteran Trevor Story struggling mightily at the plate, Campbell's versatility could really save Boston as they mull this predicament.

Manager Alex Cora is never adverse to trying something outside the box, and it's quite possible that Campbell could be that solution.
As of May 16, the Red Sox sit tied for second place in the American League East, exactly four games back of the New York Yankees. They hold the tiebreaker over the Toronto Blue Jays with a win percentage that is .001% better.
In other words, Boston sits within striking distance, but they may not outlast their competition if they don't figure out a way to properly optimize their lineup.
