Red Devils' Managerial Shake-Up: Man Utd Eyes Fletcher, Carrick, Solskjaer for Interim Stint

Manchester United has entered another period of managerial transition following the dismissal of head coach Ruben Amorim after a turbulent 14-month tenure. In the immediate aftermath, former player and current under-18s coach Darren Fletcher has been appointed interim manager, expressing a mix of immense honour and unease regarding the circumstances of Amorim's departure.
Fletcher, who played for United between 2002 and 2015, making 342 appearances and winning five Premier League titles, stepped up to lead the first team for their upcoming Premier League fixture against Burnley on Wednesday. He will be assisted at Turf Moor by under-21s coach Travis Binnion, under-21s assistant Alan Wright, and recently retired former teammate Jonny Evans, who has returned to join the coaching staff. Fletcher revealed he sought the blessing of legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson before accepting the role, a gesture of respect Ferguson reportedly supported.
Looking ahead, Fletcher could remain in charge for the FA Cup tie against Brighton on Sunday. His immediate focus, however, remains squarely on the Burnley match. He hinted at a potential tactical shift from Amorim's back three, stating that the club's under-18s typically employ a back four for player development, a system he is also familiar with. Furthermore, the squad has received a boost with the return to training of key players Bruno Fernandes and Mason Mount, both of whom are in contention to feature against Burnley, albeit on restricted minutes. Fletcher praised both players, highlighting Fernandes as the "leader of the team."
While Fletcher handles the immediate fixtures, Manchester United's hierarchy is actively assessing options for a more experienced interim appointment to manage the team until the end of the season, before making a permanent managerial decision in the summer. CEO Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox have initiated "early-stage informal talks" with several potential candidates. Former United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who previously had a three-year spell in charge, and Michael Carrick, who enjoyed an unbeaten three-game interim stint in 2021, have held discussions with the club. Ruud van Nistelrooy, who had a four-game interim spell last season, is also under consideration, though former United captain Wayne Rooney has not been approached.
The search for a new permanent head coach marks the seventh time Manchester United will seek a long-term manager since Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement in May 2013. Early contenders for the full-time role are understood to include Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner, who recently won the FA Cup with the Eagles, and former Brighton boss Roberto de Zerbi, now at Marseille. Glasner, when questioned about the links, reiterated his commitment to Crystal Palace. Although Fletcher himself has not been ruled out for the interim role until summer, he maintains that his singular concentration and efforts are currently directed at the upcoming Burnley fixture, with any discussions about extending his tenure reserved for after the game.
