Rebel Moon Writer Shares Encouraging Update on Zack Snyder Franchise's Future at Netflix

Published 22 hours ago3 minute read

Zack Snyder's Rebel Moon gets a positive progress report from one of its screenwriters amid the franchise's continued expansion. Co-writer of the first two movies, Kurt Johnstad, hints at the titular space opera film series only getting started as he hopes Netflix gives the green light to more installments soon.

Speaking with I Minutemen, Johnstad revealed that he and Snyder have mapped out four more Rebel Moon films, aligning with Snyder's vision for a six-part big-screen series. However, he admitted that he's unsure if those movies will end up premiering on Netflix, awaiting word from the streamer about Rebel Moon moving forward and financial backing to make them happen. ". Those decisions are way above me, how those things are made and where the money is going to come frombecause it's an amazing world and I love writing those characters," Johnstad said.

The first two Rebel Moon films, Part 1: A Child of Fire and Part 2: The Scargiver, dropped in late 2023 and last spring, respectively, with each film getting an R-rated director's cut with an alternate title, Chalice of Blood and Curse of Forgiveness. Johnstad remains optimistic that the Rebel Moon story will continue as its future hangs in the balance. "We know where we can go, and we have very detailed outlines – Zack has literally plotted out the whole world. So, with some luck and an act of God, we'll get to go back to that world."

Originally pitched by Snyder as an R-rated Star Wars film, Rebel Moon is set in a fictional galaxy ruled by The Motherland and their military, the Imperium, who threaten a village on the moon, Veldt. The film chronicles Kora (Sofia Boutella), a former Imperium soldier who recruits soldiers across the galaxy to stand against the military before they return to Veldt. Despite featuring a cast that also includes Academy Award-winning actor Anthony Hopkins, Oscar-nominated star Djimon Hounsou, DC Extended Universe alum Ray Fisher, and Deadpool's Ed Skrein, A Child of Fire and The Scargiver were widely panned by critics, with the former earning a 22% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and the latter getting a 16% score. However, both Rebel Moon films earned respectable viewership numbers.

As news of the Rebel Moon films awaits, Snyder continues to expand the Rebel Moon franchise with multiple projects. Last fall, Snyder rolled out a narrative fiction podcast featuring Fallout's Ella Purnell called The Seneschal: A Rebel Moon Story. Netflix and Snyder also confirmed a new video game, Blood Line: A Rebel Moon Game, which debuted in January. The game allows players to build out different rebel classes to confront the forces of the Motherworld.

Meanwhile, there's a Rebel Moon prequel comic series crafted by Gail Simone that's in the works and has recently released a sneak peek. The prequel, distributed by Titan Comics, hits shelves on Jul. 16.

Fans can stream both Rebel Moon films and their director's cuts via Netflix.
