Raptors Immortalize Lowry with 'GROAT' Statue: Golden Tribute to a Legend!

The city of Toronto recently celebrated the enduring legacy of Kyle Lowry, a beloved figure in the Toronto Raptors franchise, with an honorary block party and the unveiling of a commemorative statue. Streets were filled with fans donning red, white, and black Lowry jerseys to honor the guard whose impact on the team and city is indelible.

On Saturday, the Toronto Raptors hosted the block party outside Scotiabank Arena, where a magnificent golden raptor statue was unveiled. This sculpture prominently features Lowry's No. 7 jersey, depicting him in a dribbling stance with a basketball. The statue stands on a nameplate that proudly declares, "The Greatest Raptor of All Time. Kyle Lowry | 2012-2021, 2026," signifying his deep connection to the team.

This celebratory event follows the franchise's announcement in August that it would officially retire Lowry's jersey number during the upcoming 2026-27 season. His No. 7 jersey is scheduled to be raised to the rafters at the conclusion of Toronto's home game against the Philadelphia 76ers on January 10th of that season. In addition to the statue, the six-time All-Star was bestowed with a key to the city, a testament to his profound influence.

Expressing his gratitude, Lowry stated, "I've been looking forward to this moment for years. I always said that Toronto is home, and that I'd retire a Raptor, and to see my No. 7 go up in that building is going to mean everything to me." He further reflected on the collective achievement, adding, "We built something special here -- my teammates, the organization, the city and the fans, and all of Canada. We became champions together, and to be able to share this night with all of them, and with my family, is going to mean a lot to me."

Lowry dedicated nine of his 20 professional seasons to Toronto, playing a pivotal role in leading the Raptors to their sole NBA championship in the 2019 NBA Finals. His jersey retirement places him alongside Basketball Hall of Famer Vince Carter, whose number was retired in November 2024, as the only Raptors to receive this honor. Lowry, aged 40, announced his retirement in July after signing a symbolic one-day contract to officially retire as a member of the franchise. Throughout his 20-season career, he maintained impressive averages of 13.8 points, 4.2 rebounds, and six assists.
