President Cyril Ramaphosa has paid tribute to late former Cape Town mayors Frank van der Velde and Theresa Solomon, describing them as leaders who made significant contributions to South Africa’s democratic journey.

Ramaphosa said Van der Velde played a vital role in uniting the people of Cape Town during the country’s transition to democracy.

“He helped bring together residents of the Mother City at a critical time in our nation’s history,” the president said.

He also praised Solomon’s leadership in Cape Town’s early democratic years, following decades of activism and community development.

Ramaphosa highlighted her later diplomatic service as South Africa’s ambassador to Canada and Tanzania.

“We remember both leaders with deep appreciation for their contributions over many years to building better communities and creating economic opportunities in a part of the country that plays a vital role in our national success,” Ramaphosa said.

He noted that Cape Town remained a region of national importance, attracting global visitors and investors.

“May their souls rest in peace,” Ramaphosa concluded.

Van der Velde and Solomon both served as mayors of Cape Town during key periods of the city’s and country’s democratic evolution.
