Ralph Knowles, of Brentwood, pleads not guilty to indictment in missing East Patchogue girl case
A Brentwood man charged with the attempted rape of a 14-year-old East Patchogue girl during her 25-day disappearance last year pleaded not guilty to charges in a new indictment Wednesday.
Ralph Knowles, 63, remains charged with second-degree attempted rape and misdemeanor forcible touching, sexual abuse and endangering the welfare of a child, prosecutors said. He will stay in custody at the Suffolk County Jail with bail continued by acting Suffolk Supreme Court Justice Karen Wilutis at $250,000 cash or $700,000 bond.
"The circumstances and facts have not changed with the superseding indictment," Assistant District Attorney Zachary Kelly told the judge. "This defendant has not been indicted on any additional charges."
Defense attorney Chase Brown, of Central Islip, reserved his client’s right to make a bail application at a later date.
"We are still in the process of receiving discovery and Mr. Knowles looks forward to his day in court," Brown said following the court appearance.
The superseding indictment, unsealed last week, brings the total number of defendants charged in the girl’s disappearance to 11. Attorneys for each of the defendants, who face charges that include, rape, sex trafficking and kidnapping, has denied the allegations at arraignments held over the past two months in Central Islip and Riverhead.
The new indictment added eight new counts against codefendants Anthony Wright, 40, of Amityville, and Daniel Soto, 36, of Bay Shore, who will both be arraigned Tuesday.
Kelly said at Knowles’ previous arraignment in Riverhead that he "frequently" visited a boat in Islip where the teen spent the final 21 days she was reported missing to supply crack cocaine to her and the owner of the boat, Francis Buckheit, 64, of East Islip. Knowles is facing additional drug charges in a separate indictment, including first-degree criminal sale of a controlled substance, which carries a maximum sentence of life in prison.
Newsday is not naming the girl, who is now 15, because she is a minor and the alleged victim of a sex crime.
Rebecca Browell, 48, who lives at the same Brentwood address as Knowles, was also indicted in the drug case. She was arrested after selling illegal drugs to an undercover officer, prosecutors have said.
Prosecutors previously alleged that on one of the visits Knowles made to the boat while it was docked at Whitecap Marina he touched the teen inside her pants and also pushed her onto a couch and attempted to force her to perform a sex act.
"Fortunately, she was able to get away from the situation," Kelly told Wilutis during the Feb. 13 arraignment.
Knowles, who has three prior felony convictions for drug possession and robbery, faces up to four years in prison if convicted of the attempted rape charge. His case has been scheduled for a conference April 23, though he will not appear on that date, Brown said.
