Raising Awareness on World Voice Day for Life-Changing Voice Disorders

Dysphonia International is participating in World Voice Day on Wednesday, April 16th, an event focused on vocal health awareness and the impact of voice disorders. Millions globally, including those in Chicago’s suburbs, grapple with voice conditions affecting their ability to communicate and work. Many remain undiagnosed or misdiagnosed.

The theme for this year, “Empower Your Voice,” reflects Dysphonia International’s commitment to raising awareness about spasmodic dysphonia, vocal tremor, vocal cord paralysis, and other chronic voice disorders. These conditions disrupt vocal function, making speaking challenging or impossible. While there's no cure, early diagnosis and treatment can significantly improve life quality.

Kimberly Kuman, executive director of Dysphonia International in Itasca, notes that a voice disorder can profoundly impact a person's life, affecting relationships, careers, and self-perception. The organization aims to support individuals experiencing ongoing voice issues, encouraging them to seek medical guidance and community support.

In recognition of World Voice Day, proclamations have been issued by the state of Illinois and the village of Itasca, with the village presenting its proclamation at the April 15, 2025 board meeting. Dysphonia International encourages patients, healthcare professionals, and advocates to collaborate in promoting early diagnosis, supporting research, and increasing public understanding of voice disorders.

Interest in voice conditions has grown, partly due to increased visibility. Dysphonia International, a nonprofit organization, is dedicated to advancing research, education, awareness, and support for individuals affected by spasmodic dysphonia and related voice disorders. The organization provides resources, connection, and hope to those navigating life with a voice disorder. More information is available at dysphonia.org.
