Radford Family in Turmoil: Adoption Drama Leads to Hospital Dash Amid Stroke Fears

In a dramatic turn of events on this week’s episode of '22 Kids and Counting', Millie Radford found herself deeply shaken after her husband, Harley Passmore, was urgently rushed to hospital with fears he was having a stroke. This alarming incident brought to a head the couple’s ongoing stress and disagreements surrounding Harley’s long-held desire to legally adopt Millie’s four-year-old daughter, Ophelia.
Harley has been a paternal figure to Ophelia since she was just six months old, raising her alongside his and Millie’s other children, Chester, three, and Elodie, one. Despite not being Ophelia’s biological father—a fact not yet disclosed to the young girl—he passionately views her as his own and yearns for formal recognition. Harley expressed his deep longing for Ophelia to share the family name and for their bond to be legally cemented, fearing her future understanding of why her name differs from her siblings and parents.
However, Millie, 23, harbored significant reservations. Her primary concern was how Ophelia, at such a tender age, would process the revelation that Harley was not her biological father. She also worried about the potential for Ophelia to develop resentment or “hatred” towards Harley once she understood the full truth. The emotional strain of this unresolved issue weighed heavily on the couple.
The tension culminated in a heated argument between Millie and Harley, which was tragically followed by Harley’s sudden medical emergency. A panicked Millie, en route to the hospital in an ambulance with Harley, frantically called her mum, Sue Radford, describing Harley’s face as “lopsided” and his speech slurred, leading to terrifying suspicions of a stroke. While Sue and Noel Radford took care of the children, Millie remained steadfastly by Harley’s side in the stroke ward, overwhelmed by the “scary” ordeal and a gnawing sense of guilt, wondering if their recent disagreements had contributed to his condition. She reflected on her motherhood journey with Harley, admitting she couldn't imagine life without him.
After an agonizing night of waiting, the couple received a diagnosis that brought immense relief: Harley had not suffered a stroke, but rather Bell’s Palsy, a neurological disorder causing temporary paralysis or weakness on one side of the face. His MRI results were clear, alleviating the most dire fears.
Harley’s health scare proved to be a pivotal moment for Millie. The fear of what could have happened, and the realization of Ophelia’s potential heartache if Harley were unable to continue in his role, prompted a profound change of heart. “If anything was to happen to Harley, I know that Ophelia would have loved Harley to be her dad, so that is what I'm going to make happen,” she declared, deciding to move forward with the adoption process.
However, their journey towards adoption was far from straightforward. Despite Ophelia’s biological father not being on her birth certificate due to a lack of interest, the legal process proved unexpectedly complex. They discovered that pursuing full adoption would necessitate contacting Ophelia’s biological father for his consent, a prospect that deeply concerned both Millie and Harley. They feared he might refuse or, worse, suddenly wish to become involved in Ophelia’s life, which Millie felt would be “a lot” for the young girl to handle.
Ultimately, the couple opted for a step parental responsibility agreement. This legal route grants Harley the same decision-making rights as a biological parent concerning Ophelia’s upbringing, including her surname, schooling, and consent for medical procedures. While initially celebrating this compromise with the Radford family, Harley secretly harbored a deeper desire for full adoption. The episode concluded with a shocking revelation: Harley, still yearning for his name on Ophelia’s birth certificate, messaged her biological father behind Millie’s back, underscoring his four years of unwavering commitment to Ophelia’s life and his continued determination to be officially recognized as her father.
