Previews begin February 23, 2027, with the official opening on March 18, 2027.
Acclaimed filmmaker Quentin Tarantino is set to make his much-anticipated theatrical debut with “The Popinjay Cavalier,” a new stage play opening at London’s prestigious Phoenix Theatre. This marks a significant milestone in Tarantino’s career, as he steps from over 30 years of iconic filmmaking into the world of live theatre, bringing his unique storytelling flair to the West End.
Written and directed by Tarantino himself, “The Popinjay Cavalier” is described as a “swashbuckling comedy” and a “rambunctious comedy of deception and disguise.” Set in 1830s Europe, the play promises a sweeping celebration of theatre and its heightened romance, infused with Tarantino’s signature style and unmistakable wit. It draws inspiration from the grand adventure epics and sparkling romances of classic Hollywood and stage, including the works of literary figures like George Bruce, Ernst Vajda, and Jesse Lasky Jr.
The play will star the versatile Sacha Baron Cohen, whose casting was enthusiastically received. Baron Cohen will portray Rupert Sebastian Thomas Jr., the world’s greatest actor, whose triumphant trip to Paris to perform for the illustrious Comédie-Française takes a dangerous turn after some ill-advised words about the French. Audiences can expect a dynamic production complete with acrobatics, swordplay, daring deeds, and dastardly acts, all delivered with Tarantino's characteristic rapier wit.
“The Popinjay Cavalier” is scheduled to begin previews on February 23, 2027, with its official opening night set for March 18, 2027. The limited run will span three months, concluding on June 13, 2027. Tickets are currently on sale via the play's official website, with prices starting at an accessible £25.
Tarantino expressed his excitement for the production, stating, “I’m keen with anticipation to give the West End a great night out.” Sacha Baron Cohen echoed this enthusiasm, humorously recounting, “Quentin called, I said yes before he even got to say his first ‘motherf—er’. When the best director in the world calls, you don’t ask questions. I am beyond delighted that we will be losing our West End virginity together, I have made him promise not to be gentle.”
The production is helmed by renowned producers Tom Rothman, Chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures Entertainment’s Motion Picture Group, and Sonia Friedman. They lauded the experience of working with Tarantino, describing it as “a joy and an honor” and “quite an adventure.” They further praised Tarantino's infectious delight in collaborating with actors, fencers, acrobats, musicians, and the creative team, and commended Baron Cohen as a
