Putin's Stark Warning: Europe on Brink of War Amid Threats

The fifth episode of Euronews' new debating show, "The Ring," offered a unique glimpse into the European Parliament chamber, broadcast directly from Brussels. This edition featured a compelling discussion between two Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) with starkly contrasting political ideologies: liberal Irish MEP Cynthia Ní Mhurchú of Renew Europe and conservative Romanian MEP Cristian Terheș of the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) group.

Despite their divergent political beliefs, Ní Mhurchú and Terheș found common ground on several aspects concerning the European Union's vital role in bringing an end to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. A significant point of discussion revolved around the EU's preparedness and strategic approach to the war.

Cristian Terheș articulated a strong stance, emphasizing the urgent need for the EU to bolster its defense capabilities and proactively prepare for potential conflict. He used the analogy of a bear, stating, "If you project power, Russia is not going to attack you. Russia is like a bear. A bear is going to attack a weak animal." Terheș also critiqued the EU's past actions regarding assistance to Ukraine, suggesting that more decisive and swifter action "should have been done more and (acted) sooner."

In response to Terheș's criticisms, Cynthia Ní Mhurchú staunchly defended the European Union's diplomatic initiatives, particularly those spearheaded by Kaja Kallas. Ní Mhurchú firmly stated, "I don't accept any criticism. Kaja Kallas may not be seen in pictures, but I'm not depending on her being seen in pictures. I'm depending on her and her team negotiating hard, and they have been doing that. They didn't withdraw." Her argument highlighted the intensive, behind-the-scenes diplomatic efforts being undertaken by Kallas and her team.

"The Ring" is skillfully anchored by Méabh Mc Mahon, with production credits going to Luis Albertos Altarejos, Nikos Michos, and Amaia Echevarria, and editing overseen by Zacharia Vigneron. Viewers interested in engaging with the show can reach out via email at [email protected].
