PRP Ignites Impeachment Fury Over Tinubu's Alleged Tax Law Scandal

The Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) has unequivocally reiterated its demand for the impeachment of President Bola Tinubu, should he be found culpable in the alleged manipulation and distortion of Nigeria's tax laws. The party vehemently condemned what it described as blatant executive misconduct and a flagrant disregard for constitutional sovereignty, accusing the current administration of orchestrating recent alterations to the nation’s tax laws.

This call for impeachment comes as LEADERSHIP reports that the House of Representatives has already established a seven-member ad-hoc committee. This committee's mandate is to meticulously investigate the significant discrepancies identified between the tax laws originally passed by the National Assembly and their subsequently gazetted versions. The issue gained parliamentary attention when Hon. Abdulsammad Dasuki (PDP Sokoto) raised a Point of Privilege under Order 6, Rule 2 of the House Rules, claiming that his legislative privilege had been breached because the content of the gazetted tax laws did not align with the version voted on and passed on the floor of the House.

In a strong statement issued by its national chairman, Falalu Bello, the PRP asserted that if concrete evidence emerges implicating President Tinubu in these alleged manipulations, his impeachment must proceed immediately and without delay. The party underscored its position that no individual, including the President, is exempt from the law. Bello further highlighted that the situation indicates the executive arm has clandestinely altered bills after their passage by the National Assembly, doing so without any legislative approval. He characterized this action as a dangerous pattern of executive impunity that gravely jeopardizes the fundamental principles of Nigeria’s democracy and due process.

The PRP chairman articulated the party's deep concern, stating, “This audacious act of executive dishonesty, characterized by the insertion, deletion, and modification of substantive provisions post-passage legislation, underscores a reckless disdain for the rule of law, separation of powers, and the constitutional order. It is an unforgivable breach of trust, a mockery of the Nigerian people, and an open assault on the integrity of our legislative process.” The party condemned the act not only as illegal but also as a direct assault on the independence of the legislature and the constitutional rights of Nigerians to transparent and accountable governance. The executive’s actions, according to the PRP, reveal a disturbing tendency to undermine the sanctity of parliamentary procedures, defraud the nation, and arrogantly impose illegality under the guise of national interest. Such conduct, they warned, erodes public confidence, fuels uncertainty, and exposes Nigeria to avoidable instability across all facets of national life.

In response to these grave developments, the PRP has put forth several critical demands. Firstly, it calls for a comprehensive and transparent investigation into these alterations and additions to the already passed Act of Parliament, with the explicit aim of identifying and punishing all individuals responsible for this egregious misconduct. The party insists that those found culpable, regardless of their position, must be held accountable and face appropriate punishment for their fraudulent conduct. As previously stated, if evidence implicates President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in these illegal manipulations, the PRP reiterates its call for his impeachment without delay, emphasizing that no one is above the law.

Furthermore, the PRP demands the immediate suspension of the implementation of the disputed tax laws. This suspension is deemed necessary until all discrepancies, particularly the conflicts between the laws passed by the National Assembly and those gazetted, are thoroughly examined, resolved, and rectified. The party chairman stated that should this critical matter not be addressed promptly, the PRP would have no alternative but to seek judicial intervention. They are prepared to approach the courts to halt the enforcement of these laws and pursue appropriate redress for the violations committed, asserting that the rule of law and constitutional integrity must take precedence.

The PRP warned that unless urgent and decisive steps are taken, this administration’s blatant disregard for constitutional order will inevitably deepen the crisis of governance, erode accountability, and further diminish Nigeria’s credibility on the global stage. The party appealed to all patriotic Nigerians, civil society organizations, and the legislative arm to collectively stand firm against what it perceives as an assault on Nigeria's democracy. Concluding its statement, the PRP affirmed that no government, irrespective of its political inclination, stands above the law. It declared that the current breach must be met with unwavering resolve to defend Nigeria’s constitutional integrity, uphold the rule of law, and restore public confidence in its institutions, warning that anything less would constitute a betrayal of the Nigerian people and a capitulation to executive tyranny.
