Property Peril: Sarah Beeny's Desperate Battle for 'Downton Abbey' Dream Home

TV presenter Sarah Beeny is facing an imminent update regarding the demolition order for her £3million Somerset home, dubbed a "mini Downton Abbey." The extensive seven-bedroom mansion, built without proper planning permission, has been at the center of a six-year dispute with the local council and concerned residents. Despite her efforts, Beeny's retrospective application was refused, and she subsequently lost her appeal in March, even after her design team presented a comprehensive 125-page document arguing their case.
The saga began in 2018 when Beeny purchased the Somerset property with her husband, Graham. They proceeded to demolish the original 1970s farmhouse and construct the much larger mansion. However, the extension was carried out without prior consent, leading to the current enforcement action. The council's decision to mandate demolition stems from a breach of planning conditions, specifically those that required the original farmhouse to be taken down.
Sarah Beeny and her husband have been informed they will meet with Somerset Council officials and specialists at the site in late September or early October to determine the next steps. This follows an earlier statement from the council indicating they were "reviewing the case in respect of further action" regarding the breach of planning conditions.
Adding a poignant layer to her fight, Beeny was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2022. She has expressed deep sentimentality for her home, largely due to her four sons – Billy, Charlie, Laurie, and Rafferty – and her personal history of losing her own mother, Ann, to breast cancer at a young age. She has openly shared how her home represents comfort and stability. However, her sons recently offered a profound perspective, reminding her that her presence, not the physical house or objects, is what truly matters to them, helping her to re-evaluate her attachment to material possessions.
