Pro-Ject's Pocket-Sized Head Box E Packs a Punch for Pennies

stereo amplifier, CD Box E CD player, and Juke Box E vinyl playback hi-fi system.

Measuring just 37x103x120 mm [HxWxD] and weighing 390g, the Head Box E is small enough to be classed as portable, yet this desk-top headphone amp is claimed to be able to drive "even the most demanding headphones," with Pro-Ject boasting it is "one of the most effective pound-for-pound hi-fi upgrades around."

According to the spec sheet, the Head Box E may well have the skills, starting with its 665 milliwatts (0.665 watts) into 32 ohms output and support for impedance loads of 8-600ohms, which should be enough to cater for most wired headphones. Moreover, Pro-Ject says this petite powerhouse even "outperforms the headphone stages typically found in (full-sized) stereo amps".

Inside the full-metal housing (available with silver or black faceplates) are fully discrete electronics, which are said to give the designers greater control over the signal path. The upshot of this, we're told, is "more robust power handling, cleaner performance, improved long-term reliability."

Being so compact, there are no fancy displays or such. Instead, there's a large volume dial alongside 6.3mm and 3.5mm outputs, which can be used simultaneously. Located at the rear is a pair of RCA input sockets, along with a bypass RCA loop output for passing the signal to another amplifier or audio device, allowing the Head Box E to be integrated into a larger system.

The Pro-Ject Head Box E is available now for £89 / €119.

Each time StereoNET reviews a product, it is considered for an Applause Award. Winning one marks it out as a design of great quality and distinction – a special product in its class, on the grounds of either performance, value for money, or usually both.

Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.

The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.

We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality. Receiving such an award is the prerequisite to becoming eligible for our annual Product of the Year awards, awarded only to the finest designs in their respective categories. Buyers of hi-fi, home cinema, and headphones can be sure that a StereoNET Applause Award winner is worthy of your most serious attention.
