Pretoria has once again affirmed its status as the epicentre of South African athletics, with athletes from Athletics Gauteng North (AGN) delivering a commanding performance at the senior ASA Championships held this past weekend in Potchefstroom.

Demonstrating their continued dominance on the national stage, AGN athletes outclassed their rivals at the NWU McArthur Stadium, clinching the overall title with remarkable ease. The Pretoria-based team amassed a staggering 535 points—more than double that of their closest competitor, Athletics Central North West (ACNW), who finished with 265 points.

Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) secured third place with 240 points, while Western Province Athletics (WPA) and Athletics Free State (AFS) followed with 135 and 125 points respectively.

In the medal tally, AGN was equally impressive, collecting a total of 45 medals—nearly twice as many as ACNW and CGA, who each finished with 23. AGN’s medal haul included 17 golds, 14 silvers, and 14 bronzes, with the gold medal count standing out as a testament to their athletes’ superiority. Both ACNW and CGA managed seven gold medals apiece.

Once again, Pretoria has proven that it remains the heart of elite athletics in South Africa, with AGN setting the benchmark for excellence.
