Gauteng North Dominates Junior Athletics Championship | Sports News
The ASA U16, U18, U20, and U23 Track and Field Championships, held at Green Point Athletics Stadium this past weekend, once again showcased the dominance of Gauteng North (AGN) in South African junior athletics.
AGN cemented its status as the nation’s most formidable athletics association, far outpacing its competition in both medal count and overall points. The Pretoria-based team secured an astounding 168 medals—74 gold, 48 silver, and 46 bronze—doubling the medal tally of their closest rivals. On the scoreboard, AGN amassed an impressive 1857 points, leaving Central Gauteng Athletics (841 points) and Boland Athletics (785 points) trailing far behind.
Athletes from AGN also broke 10 of the 28 event records set at the championships, further underlining their dominance. Schools such as Die Hoërskool Menlopark and Afrikaanse Hoër Seuns- and Meisieskole played a pivotal role in AGN’s success, but one of the standout contributors was Curro Hazeldean. The school’s athletes delivered an exceptional performance, winning eight gold, five silver, and four bronze medals.
Curro Hazeldean’s rise in athletics is part of a broader initiative by the Curro Group to develop young talent through structured sports programs. Led by Manus Hendriks, Curro’s Sports Project Manager for Athletics, the program emphasizes mass participation and excellence at all levels. This year’s championship saw a record number of Curro learners competing, demonstrating the effectiveness of their approach.
“Our goal is to create an environment where young athletes can thrive, pushing their limits and competing at the highest level,” Hendriks explained. “The record number of Curro learners at this year’s national championship is proof of the effectiveness of our programmes and the dedication of our athletes.”
