Press Play: The Movies Everyone Is Watching This Weekend
Friday is here. TGIF floods statuses, timelines, stories, 9-5ers exhale before Monday strikes again, it is time for another weekend at the movies and on streaming.
This weekend hits differently, three releases dropping, two record-breaking movies that should be in your watchlists. There is something for everyone: horror lovers, families, Prime Video subscribers and everyone who just wants to relax this weekend with something entertaining.
SuperNowa
Prime Video just dropped this one today. Director Sonia Irabor made something deeply personal, a drama about Nowa, a gifted 12-year-old girl who just wants to stay invisible but gets pushed into a major competition by her new teacher and brother.
This is not your typical child prodigy movie, Irabor is exploring the emotional weight that comes with being called special, the pressure of expectations, social anxiety, the isolation of being seen as extraordinary when you just want to be normal.
Streaming exclusively on Prime Video across Africa and select global territories, this one is tender, raw, fiercely resonant, the kind of film that understands adolescence in a way most movies don't even try to, it is about brilliance and silence and the quiet courage it takes to show up when the world demands too much too soon.
Primate
Your family pet never looked this terrifying.
Director Johannes Roberts says forget CGI, forget safe Hollywood horror, we are going old school with this one. A rabid chimpanzee named Ben turning a Hawaiian vacation into an absolute bloodbath, 89 minutes of pure chaos.
Troy Kotsur and Johnny Sequoyah star in what critics are already calling 2026's first must-see horror. Fantastic Fest audiences lost their minds over the practical effects, the gore, and the fact that this movie does not hold back for a second.
Most of the action goes down in one family home and pool area, nowhere to run, nowhere to hide, just you and a very angry primate.
Roberts directed 47 Meters Down so he knows how to trap people and make them squirm, this time he is keeping it tight, keeping it vicious, keeping it real with actual creature effects that earn that R rating.
Sitting at 77% on Rotten Tomatoes, horror Twitter is already declaring it a classic, get to theaters before someone spoils the kills.
The Chronology of Water
Kristen Stewart directing, Imogen Poots acting her heart out, Cannes standing ovations, awards buzz everywhere you look, this is the film people will either call a masterpiece or pretentious and there's no in between.
Based on Lidia Yuknavitch's memoir, 128 minutes of childhood trauma, competitive swimming, addiction, toxic relationships, finding yourself through writing, Stewart isn't interested in telling this story straight, she is going full narrator with fluid memory sequences, constant voiceover, prioritizing feeling over plot.
The film had a limited December release, now it is expanding wider and the discourse is getting louder.
92% on Rotten Tomatoes but read those reviews, critics are split hard, some saying Poots deserves every award nomination coming her way, others saying the experimental structure is too much, too heavy, too inaccessible.
Cannes gave it a six-and-a-half-minute standing ovation which translates to you either need to see it immediately or a warning that it is not for everyone. Stewart made the movie she wanted to make, no compromises.
Poots committed fully to the rawness, you will either leave the theater thinking about it for days or wishing you had picked literally anything else.
Behind the Scenes
Funke Akindele is doing it again, her third billion-naira film in three years. Behind the Scenes just crossed N1.77 billion at the box office in under four weeks, making it the highest-grossing Nollywood film of 2025, the fastest film in West African history to hit N1 billion, doing it in just 17 days.
The story hits close to home for so many Nigerians. Aderonke "Ronky-Feller" Faniran played by Scarlet Gomez is a successful real estate mogul drowning under the weight of family and friends constantly asking for money, everyone leeching off her generosity until she finally breaks.
The film explores that one person in every family who carries everyone else's financial burden.
Co-directed by Funke Akindele and Tunde Olaoye, the cast is stacked with Nollywood heavyweights, Iyabo Ojo, Tobi Bakre, Uzor Arukwe, Destiny Etiko, Ini Dima-Okojie, Funke herself playing the entitled elder sister Adetutu.
Critics say it is relatable even if the moral lessons get heavy-handed, the product placement is aggressive, but audiences don't care because they see their own lives on screen.
The film smashed five opening-weekend records, earned N129.5 million in a single day on Boxing Day, the highest single-day gross in Nollywood history. It is still showing in the cinemas. You can catch it this weekend.
Oversabi Aunty
Toyin Abraham came through with her own blockbuster, Oversabi Aunty just crossed N711.5 million in 18 days, making it the fourth highest-grossing Nollywood film of all time in West Africa. This is her first film to break the N700 million mark, another massive win for one of Nollywood's most bankable filmmakers.
The film centers on Toun, a well-meaning but overly involved church usher whose "oversabi" personality, that person who knows too much, does too much, gets involved in everything even when nobody asked, keeps getting her into trouble.
It is a comedy that taps into a very specific Nigerian character type everyone knows and either loves or finds annoying.
Written, produced, directed by and starring Toyin Abraham, the cast includes Mike Ezuruonye, Efe Irele, Queen Nwokoye, Jemima Osunde, Enioluwa Adeoluwa.
The film built serious buzz on social media before release with skits and memes about oversabi aunties going viral, that momentum translated into a strong opening weekend, the second-highest opening of 2025.
Released December 19th and still packing cinemas, Oversabi Aunty proves Toyin Abraham knows her audience and knows how to make them laugh. You can catch it this weekend as well.
The Weekend Decision
Prime Video subscribers fire up SuperNowa and grab tissues for a coming-of-age story that actually gets it. Horror fans sprint to Primate before your group chat ruins the ending.
Film Twitter heads debate The Chronology of Water frame by frame for the next month, Nollywood lovers hit cinemas for Behind the Scenes to witness Funke Akindele's record-breaking dominance or catch Oversabi Aunty for Toyin Abraham's comedy magic before it leaves screens.
There is truly something for every mood, every vibe, every type of film lover out there. The only question left is what matches your energy, what are you watching?
