President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will personally inaugurate the 23rd National Sports Festival, Coal City Games Enugu 2026, affirming the government's commitment to sports as a tool for national unity. Preparations are in full swing, with venue upgrades and funding confirmed, as Enugu prepares to host an estimated 12,000 athletes and officials.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is slated to personally declare open the 23rd National Sports Festival, officially dubbed the Coal City Games Enugu 2026. This significant announcement was made by Bukola Olopade, Director-General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), following a Joint Technical Meeting held on Wednesday, October 29, 2026, in Enugu. The meeting, which gathered Directors of Sports, members of the Main Organising Committee (MOC), the Local Organising Committee (LOC), and other crucial stakeholders at Best Western Plus Hotel, Independence Layout, concluded after a thorough inspection of venues and facilities.
Olopade emphasized that President Tinubu's personal attendance highlights the administration's profound commitment to leveraging sports as a vital tool for national unity, youth empowerment, and economic growth. He affirmed that the flag-off date is sacrosanct, underscoring Enugu's readiness to host the forthcoming Games. The festival is confirmed to commence on November 28, 2026, with contingents expected to begin their arrival from November 26.
The technical meeting proved highly productive, resolving critical issues essential for the successful hosting of the event. Regarding facilities, the NSC DG assured that all major concerns have been effectively addressed. Contractors responsible for upgrading Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium and other designated venues have fully mobilized, with the stadium's renovation and branding poised to deliver a complete transformation. Furthermore, Olopade provided an assurance that the swimming pool, a Federal Government-funded project initiated approximately four to five weeks prior, will be ready by November 18, 2026, indicating that the project is well on track.
Financial and logistical preparations are also solid, as Olopade confirmed that funds are ready for release to both the LOC and MOC. Equipment, which had previously been a point of concern, has now been procured and will be deployed as planned. He extended commendation to Enugu State Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah and the Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Lloyd Ekweremadu, for their unwavering commitment to delivering a world-class festival. Olopade described Enugu as a secure sporting city and urged Nigerians to dismiss any negative narratives, asserting the nation's proven capacity to host major sporting events successfully.
In response, Commissioner Ekweremadu warmly welcomed the NSC officials, Directors of Sports, technical directors, and federation secretaries, providing assurances that all observations raised during the inspection teams would be meticulously addressed before the opening ceremony. Thecla Opara, MOC Secretary and Director of Festival and Para-Sports, further highlighted key observations from the inspection and technical teams, urging the state government to implement the necessary corrections. Similarly, Bamiduro Olumide, LOC Secretary, reiterated the commitment to address all noted observations. The Coal City Games Enugu 2026 is projected to host an estimated 12,000 athletes and officials from across the Federation, promising a grand sporting spectacle.
