Presidential committee arrive Katsina ahead of Buhari's burial

The committee set up by President Bola Tinubu to plan the state burial of former President Muhammadu Buhari has arrived in Katsina State, ahead of his interment in Daura, his hometown.

This development was confirmed on Tuesday by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, in a statement posted on his X handle.

The committee’s arrival came hours after the late president’s body departed London aboard a Nigerian Air Force aircraft. Buhari, who died on Sunday in a London hospital after a prolonged illness, will be laid to rest with full state honours.

Vice President Kashim Shettima led a federal delegation to the United Kingdom to coordinate the repatriation of the body and complete necessary documentation.

President Tinubu constituted an Inter-Ministerial Committee to organise the state funeral.

The Committee, which is chaired by Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Sen. George Akume, is tasked with the responsibility of planning and coordinating a befitting state burial for the late elder statesman.

Other members of the committee include the following: Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy; Minister of Budget and Economic Planning; Minister of Defence; Minister of Information and National Orientation; Minister of Works and Minister of Interior.

Others are: Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT); Minister of Housing and Urban Development; Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare; Minister of Art, Culture and Creative Economy; National Security Adviser; Special Adviser to the President on Policy and Coordination; Senior Special Assistant to the President on Political and Other Matters; Inspector General of Police.

The Office of the Permanent Secretary, General Services Office (GSO), would serve as the Secretariat to the Committee.

According to Idris, Minister of Information, the committee is working in collaboration with the Katsina State Government and the family of the former president to ensure a coordinated funeral programme.

President Tinubu also declared a seven-day national mourning period starting Sunday, July 13, during which national flags are to fly at half-mast.
