President Tinubu Unveils New Central Bank Leadership with Yuguda's Appointment

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially approved the nomination of Lamido Abubakar Yuguda as Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, subject to Senate confirmation.
The announcement was made by Presidential Special Adviser Bayo Onanuga, adhering to Section 8(1) of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act, 2007.
Yuguda's appointment follows the redeployment of former Deputy Governor Mr. Bala Bello, who now serves as Special Adviser to the President on Political Economy. President Tinubu has charged both officials with renewed dedication and professionalism in fostering Nigeria's economic stability and growth.
Yuguda is a highly regarded financial sector professional bringing decades of experience in monetary policy, financial regulation, and global finance, most recently serving as Director-General of the Securities and Exchange Commission from 2020 to 2024.
In that role, he oversaw the regulation and development of Nigeria's capital markets, driving reforms, investor protection, and market integrity initiatives.
Yuguda commenced his professional journey at the CBN in 1984 as a Senior Supervisor in the Foreign Operations Department, responsible for maintaining Nigeria's external debt records.
He also worked in the Banking Supervision Department in 1985 and was a pioneer staff member of the Debt Conversion Committee Secretariat in 1988.
From 1997 to 2001, Yuguda gained significant international experience as an Economist in the Africa Department of the IMF, assessing economic policies and managing balance-of-payments support programs for member countries.
Upon returning to Nigeria, he continued rising through the CBN ranks, eventually becoming Director of the Reserve Management Department in 2010.
In this critical role, held for six years until his CBN retirement in 2016, he led teams responsible for managing and diversifying Nigeria's foreign exchange reserves. He implemented risk-aware investment strategies and grew reserve assets significantly through disciplined portfolio management.
Yuguda earned a Bachelor of Science in Accountancy from Ahmadu Bello University in 1983 and a Master's degree in Money, Banking and Finance from the University of Birmingham in 1991.
He is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria, a Chartered Financial Analyst Charterholder, and a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria.
He also holds certificates in Financial Asset Management from the Swiss Finance Institute and Investment Performance Management from the CFA Institute.
His executive leadership training spans prestigious global institutions including Harvard, INSEAD, Oxford's Saïd Business School, Wharton, and London Business School.
