President Tinubu's High-Stakes Rome Security Summit

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is set to embark on a crucial diplomatic journey, departing Abuja today, Sunday, October 12, for Rome, the capital of Italy. His primary objective is to participate in the Aqaba Process Heads of State and Government Level Meeting, an initiative specifically tailored to address the escalating security crisis in West Africa.
The announcement came via a statement issued by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, on Saturday. The high-level meeting is scheduled to commence on October 14, bringing together a distinguished assembly of leaders. This includes Heads of State and Government, senior intelligence and military officials from various African countries, as well as representatives from inter-governmental and non-governmental organisations. Their collective aim is to engage in in-depth discussions regarding the complex and evolving security challenges that confront the West African region.
The Aqaba Process itself is a significant counter-terrorism initiative, originally launched in 2015 by King Abdullah II of Jordan. It operates under the joint chairmanship of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan and the Italian Government, reflecting a strong international commitment to global security. The initiative is founded on the recognition of the multifaceted security threats prevalent in West Africa. These include, but are not limited to, the relentless expansion of terrorist networks, the increasingly intricate crime-terror nexus, and the concerning overlap between land-based terrorism, particularly in the Sahel region, and pervasive maritime piracy in the Gulf of Guinea.
During the meeting, participants are expected to engage in a comprehensive exchange of assessments concerning the current security landscape across West Africa. A key focus will be to foster enhanced collaboration among regional and international partners, which is deemed essential for effectively tackling cross-border security challenges. Furthermore, the agenda includes developing robust strategies designed to counter both land-based and sea-based terror threats. Discussions will also delve into innovative ideas for coordinating efforts to combat online radicalisation and disrupt the digital networks frequently exploited for terrorist propaganda and recruitment.
In addition to his participation in the plenary sessions of the Aqaba meeting, President Tinubu is slated to hold a series of bilateral discussions with other heads of state and leaders. These talks are intended to explore practical ways and collaborative strategies for mitigating the rising tide of insecurity that continues to plague the subregion.
President Tinubu's delegation underscores the gravity of this mission, comprising key government officials. Among those accompanying him are the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu–Ojukwu; the Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar; the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu; and the Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Ambassador Mohammed Mohammed. Several other senior government officials will also be part of the presidential entourage, reflecting a unified approach to addressing regional security concerns.
