Premier League Legend James Milner Hangs Up Boots After Epic 24-Season Run
Former England midfielder James Milner has officially announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 40, concluding a remarkable 24-season career in the Premier League. Milner, who spent his final three years at Brighton, set a new record for the most Premier League appearances during a match against Brentford in February, finishing his illustrious career with a total of 658.
Reflecting on his extensive career, Milner shared his sentiments on Instagram, stating, "After 24 seasons in the Premier League, it feels like the right time to bring an end to my playing career." He recalled his debut for boyhood club Leeds at 16, where he became the Premier League's youngest scorer at the time, expressing astonishment at his journey. He highlighted significant moments such as fighting for survival, winning numerous trophies, playing in European competitions, and representing England in two European Championships and two World Cups. Above all, Milner emphasized that the people and friendships forged throughout his career are what he will cherish forever, leaving the game with immense pride, gratitude, and unforgettable memories.
Milner's 658 Premier League appearances place him at the top of an exclusive list of players. He surpassed Gareth Barry's previous record of 653 appearances, which Barry achieved across spells with Aston Villa, Manchester City, Everton, and West Brom. Other legends in the '600 club' include Ryan Giggs with 632 appearances for Manchester United and Frank Lampard, who played 609 games for Chelsea, West Ham, and Manchester City. Interestingly, no goalkeepers have reached the 600-appearance mark, with David James ranking fifth overall with 572 appearances. The top 10 further features Gary Speed (535), Emile Heskey (514), Mark Schwarzer (514), Jamie Carragher (508), and Phil Neville (505). Additionally, Rio Ferdinand (504), Steven Gerrard (504), and Sol Campbell (503) also broke the 500-appearance barrier. Ryan Giggs, Jamie Carragher, and Steven Gerrard are the only players to have made over 500 appearances for a single club. In terms of minutes played, Barry remains significantly ahead with 54,439 minutes, while Milner ranks 12th with 40,876 minutes.
James Milner's career began at Leeds, where he made 48 appearances and, at 16 years and 356 days, was the Premier League's youngest goalscorer at the time (now second only to James Vaughan). He then moved to Newcastle, playing 94 times, followed by Aston Villa, where he made 100 appearances, including a loan spell. His most successful periods were arguably five seasons at Manchester City, where he played 147 games and secured two Premier League titles, and eight seasons at Liverpool, making 230 appearances and winning a third Premier League title. His final club, Brighton, saw him play 39 times after joining in the summer of 2023, with his last season (2024-25) being limited to four appearances due to injuries, though he was part of the team that qualified for Europe for the second time in the club's history.
Throughout his extensive career, Milner scored a total of 56 Premier League goals, with 19 for Liverpool, 13 for Manchester City, 12 for Aston Villa, six for Newcastle, five for Leeds, and one for Brighton. He also accumulated 90 assists, placing him 10th on the all-time Premier League assists list, underscoring his consistent impact and versatility over more than two decades in top-flight football.
