Power Couple Split: Sue Bird and Megan Rapinoe Announce Separation
Retired sports legends Sue Bird and Megan Rapinoe have announced their separation after a decade-long relationship. The news was shared via social media on Friday, with the couple stating, "There really is no smooth or easy way to share this news. After a lot of thought, we've made the decision to separate as a couple." They emphasized that this difficult decision was made together, with mutual love, respect, and care for each other.
Sue Bird, 45, is a decorated WNBA star who played 19 seasons, all with the Seattle Storm, securing four WNBA titles. She also boasts five Olympic gold medals with the U.S. national team. A former UConn standout, Bird was the No. 1 pick in the 2002 WNBA draft, having led the Huskies to two NCAA titles. She retired from the WNBA after the 2022 season and was inducted into the Naismith Hall of Fame last year. Currently, Bird serves as the managing director of the U.S. women's national basketball team.
Megan Rapinoe, 40, is an iconic figure in women's soccer, having played a pivotal role in the United States women's national soccer team's FIFA Women's World Cup victories in 2015 and 2019. She also earned an Olympic gold medal with Team USA in 2012. Rapinoe concluded her NWSL career at the end of the 2023 season.
Reflecting on their shared life, Bird and Rapinoe wrote, "We've shared a whole life over the last decade, through big moments and in quiet ones, and that is something we'll always carry with us." They expressed gratitude for their supportive community, which they stated has "held us up, welcomed us in, and supported us exactly as we are."
Beyond their athletic careers, the couple also engaged in joint business ventures, notably their podcast titled "A Touch More." They described the experience of building a network around the podcast as a "tremendous joy," valuing the conversations, laughter, and connection it fostered. While the chapter of producing the podcast together is ending, they affirmed that the community and connections built through it will endure.
