Political Parties to Protest Chief Justice's Suspension

A coalition of political parties in Ghana, including the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Ghana Union Movement (GUM), Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), National Democratic Party (NDP), and People’s National Party (PNP), has announced a nationwide demonstration scheduled for Monday, May 5, 2025. The protest is in response to the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo and what the parties describe as a growing disregard for the rule of law by the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC).

President John Dramani Mahama suspended Chief Justice Torkornoo on Tuesday, April 22, following a prima facie case established from three petitions calling for her removal. This decision, made under Article 146(6) of the 1992 Constitution after consulting with the Council of State, has been widely condemned by the coalition, who view it as an assault on judicial independence.

In a joint statement issued on Friday, April 25, the political parties accused the NDC of a pattern of judicial intimidation, referencing a past attempt in 2010 to remove Ghana’s first female Chief Justice, Georgina Theodora Wood. The coalition believes the suspension of Torkornoo is a continuation of this trend, posing a serious threat to Ghana’s democracy.

The protesting parties also allege a covert plan by the NDC to amend the constitution to allow President Mahama to run for a third term in 2028, despite his ineligibility. They vow to resist any attempts to manipulate the laws for political gain, emphasizing the need to protect Ghana’s democratic institutions. The planned demonstration aims to draw attention to these issues and rally citizens to stand for justice and defend the constitutional order.
