Political Firestorm: Ex-AGF Malami Slammed Over 'Breach Of Public Peace'

Members of the Kebbi State Caucus in the National Assembly have publicly called for the arrest and prosecution of Abubakar Malami, SAN, the immediate-past Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation (AGF). The caucus accused Malami of breaching public peace within Kebbi State. This call came during a press briefing in Abuja, where Senator Adamu Aliero, representing Kebbi Central, addressed a petition authored by Malami on September 10, 2025, against Governor Nasir Idris.
Senator Aliero, supported by other Senators and House of Representatives members from Kebbi State, stated that Malami’s petition alleged Governor Nasir Idris and other political figures were involved in importing political thugs, foreign mercenaries, and engaging in clandestine arms deals in the state. The caucus vehemently denied these allegations, branding them as false, unfounded, and politically motivated. They described Malami’s actions as a desperate attempt to undermine the peace, progress, and stability enjoyed under Governor Nasir Idris's leadership, suggesting Malami was acting as the leader of an 'imaginary opposition party' in Kebbi State.
The Caucus further presented counter-allegations against Malami. They asserted that during Malami’s recent condolence visit to Birnin Kebbi, he allegedly hired thugs from Sokoto, Koko, and Rara. These thugs, under his watch, reportedly attacked the APC State Secretariat with stones and chanted 'One Term' against the governor, leading to violent clashes with APC supporters. The caucus emphasized that such an incident was unprecedented in Kebbi politics, which is known for its peaceful nature and mutual respect, thereby implicating Malami as the true instigator of chaos.
The National Assembly Caucus underscored that the Kebbi State Government and the APC family have never been involved in clandestine activities or linked with terrorist groups, contrary to what Malami, a former Chief Law Officer and Senior Advocate, mischievously signed. They highlighted Kebbi State's status as one of Nigeria's most peaceful states, attributing this to deliberate investments in security, collaboration with security agencies, and overwhelming citizen support, especially crediting Governor Idris's performance in the security sector.
They urged Nigerians to recognize Malami’s petition as a smear campaign, laced with dangerous rhetoric intended to incite fear and distract from his 'dwindling political relevance.' The caucus deemed his alarmist narratives and unverified claims about foreign mercenaries and terrorism as irresponsible and reckless, particularly coming from a former top law officer. They also appealed to security agencies to focus on genuine threats to national security, not to be drawn into partisan theatrics, and reaffirmed their unwavering support for security efforts, asking the agencies to invite Malami to substantiate his allegations.
Senator Garba Musa Maidoki, representing Kebbi South, reinforced the APC's peaceful nature, noting that Malami’s house is less than 50 meters from the APC state headquarters, and clashes had never occurred until this recent incident. He challenged Malami to produce evidence for his claims of weapons importation, rejecting any association with dangerous activities or terrorism. Senator Maidoki also commended President Bola Tinubu’s efforts in combating insecurity, citing significant progress in his constituency where previously abandoned villages have now been reoccupied, expressing optimism for continued improvement.
