Political Firestorm: El-Rufai Grilled in Kaduna Over Alleged N-Money Laundering Scandal!

Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, was on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, arraigned before the Federal High Court in Kaduna by officials of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) on allegations related to corruption and money laundering. El-Rufai appeared before Justice Rilwan M. Aikawa, where proceedings focused on a multi-count charge filed by the anti-graft agency. He was formally arraigned alongside co-defendant Joel Adoga, with the court proceeding despite pending applications already before the judge.
The charges against the former governor are extensive, initially focusing on one count related to alleged deposits into a domiciliary account and the monetisation of his earnings. However, the suit, identified as FHC KD 73 2026, encompasses multiple counts linked to the alleged conversion and possession of public property, as well as broader allegations of money laundering. Further accusations include abuse of office, fraud, intent to commit fraud, and conferring undue advantage, among other related offenses.
Ubong Akpan, counsel to the former governor, informed journalists after the session that the core of the charges revolved around financial transactions involving El-Rufai's domiciliary account. The court has subsequently adjourned the matter to March 31, 2026, to deliberate on pending applications, which include a request for bail. During Tuesday’s proceedings, no bail application was formally made or granted, with this crucial issue expected to be addressed when the case resumes. Akpan also confirmed that there were no contentious developments during the hearing and noted that the defense had not yet been served with documents pertinent to other potential cases.
