Political Earthquake: SDP Rocked by Mass Expulsions

The National Working Committee (NWC) of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) has announced the expulsion of its former National Chairman, Alhaji Shehu Musa Gabam, alongside several other high-ranking officials. This decisive action was taken in Abuja during a recent NWC meeting, presided over by the Acting National Chairman, Dr. Sadiq Umar Abubakar Gombe. The primary reasons cited for these expulsions were grave violations of the party’s constitution, encompassing allegations of misconduct, misappropriation, and other significant constitutional infractions.

The announcement was formally made by Mr. Rufus Aiyenigba, the national publicity secretary, who read out the comprehensive list of the affected members. He recounted that the process leading to these expulsions commenced on June 24, 2025, when the NWC initially suspended three national officers. These individuals, Alhaji Shehu Gabam, former National Chairman; Mr. Ogbonna Chukwuma Uchechukwu, former National Youth Leader; and Mr. Clarkson Nnadi, former National Auditor, were suspended pending thorough investigations into allegations of administrative and financial misconduct.

To guarantee a fair and unbiased inquiry, the NWC established an independent disciplinary committee on July 4, 2025. This committee was tasked with investigating the allegations and submitting a comprehensive report. After two weeks of intensive deliberation, the committee presented its findings on July 18, 2025. The report unequivocally confirmed the alleged violations and subsequently recommended stringent disciplinary measures against the suspended officers. Following this crucial report, the NWC formed a subcommittee to develop a white paper, which was ultimately submitted on August 15, 2025, and adopted by the NWC as binding party resolutions.

In light of these findings, the NWC formally resolved to remove Alhaji Shehu Musa Gabam as National Chairman, with immediate effect, due to gross misconduct. Similarly, Mr. Ogbonna Chukwuma Uchechukwu was removed from his position as National Youth Leader and expelled from the party for his role in violating the party’s constitution. However, Mr. Clarkson Nnadi’s situation differed; he voluntarily tendered his resignation as National Auditor through a formal letter addressed to the acting chairman, a resignation which the NWC promptly accepted.

In a related but distinct incident, the NWC also reviewed a report concerning the unlawful entry into the SDP National Secretariat, located at 17 Nairobi Street, Wuse II, Abuja. Mr. Aiyenigba detailed that on the night of July 28, 2025, a group of individuals illicitly broke into the office. These suspects were subsequently apprehended by security agents while in possession of stolen documents and party property. The individuals identified in connection with this unauthorized entry include Adamu Modibbo, Abubakar Dogara, Nuraddeen Bisalla, Solsuema Osaro, Ambo Ekpeyong, Eluwa Henry, Humphrey Unwukaeze, and Judith Shuaibu. These eight individuals are currently facing prosecution in court for their actions. Consequently, the NWC resolved to expel all eight individuals involved in this unlawful invasion of the party’s secretariat, further demonstrating its zero-tolerance stance on such transgressions.

Looking ahead, the NWC has affirmed its commitment to fully implement the recommendations outlined in the white paper. This initiative aims to significantly strengthen administrative safeguards and enhance the overall internal party governance structure. The NWC underscored its unanimous adoption of all resolutions, unequivocally reaffirming the party's core commitments to discipline, accountability, transparency, and an unwavering adherence to the rule of law, thereby seeking to uphold the integrity and foundational principles of the Social Democratic Party.
