Political Earthquake in Rivers: APC Sweeps Local Elections, Crushing Opposition

The All Progressives Congress (APC) achieved a sweeping victory in the recent Chairmanship and Councillorship elections held in Rivers State, securing 20 out of the 23 local government areas. In contrast, the state's ruling party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), managed to win only three LGAs in the polls conducted by the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC).

Dr. Michael Odey, Chairman of the RSIEC, officially announced the results on Sunday afternoon at the commission’s Headquarters along Aba Road in Port Harcourt. While the winners of the vice-chairmanship elections were also declared, the results for the councillorship elections were pending at the time of the announcement.

A significant highlight of the election results was the loss of Opobo-Nkoro LGA by the suspended Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, to the APC. Governor Fubara and his supporters were notably absent during the elections on Saturday, an absence that underscores the deep-seated political rift in the state. President Bola Tinubu had earlier this year declared a state of emergency in Rivers due to heightened political instability, subsequently suspending Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Odu, and all members of the Rivers assembly for six months. In June, a peace meeting hosted by Tinubu at the State House in Abuja brought together Wike, Fubara, and state assembly members to address the crisis.
