Political Earthquake: Ex-Reps Member Baballe Ila Defects, Jolts APC

Hon. Nasiru Baballe Ila, a prominent political figure with a distinguished record as a two-time member of the House of Representatives and a former Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matters (House of Representatives) under the late President Muhammadu Buhari, has officially announced his resignation from the All Progressives Congress (APC). In a letter dated October 23, 2025, addressed to the Ward Chairman of Gyadi-Gyadi Arewa in Tarauni Local Government Area of Kano State, Ila described his decision as a “painful yet necessary” step, citing profound dissatisfaction with the party’s internal dynamics.
Ila’s departure from the APC stems from deep-seated concerns regarding marginalisation and a pervasive lack of internal democracy within the party. He explicitly accused the APC leadership, particularly in Kano, of consistently sidelining founding members, especially those who originated from the defunct Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), one of the legacy parties instrumental in the formation of the APC. His letter highlighted that the treatment he and his supporters received, coupled with other significant developments, compelled him to make this drastic move.
During his tenure, Ila represented the Tarauni Federal Constituency between 2011 and 2019, demonstrating a long-standing commitment to the party since its inception. Despite this dedication, he lamented that he and his loyal supporters had been systematically denied recognition and actively excluded from party activities. He emphasized that the leadership’s refusal at all levels to acknowledge and involve core legacy members from the defunct CPC was profoundly disheartening, painting a picture of a party deviating from its foundational principles.
A specific incident that underscored his disillusionment was the denial of a return ticket to the House of Representatives in 2019. Ila views this event as a clear reflection of the party’s increasing disregard for fairness and inclusiveness. He asserted that the APC’s glaring lack of internal democracy and inclusive practices directly contradicts the progressive ideals it purports to uphold. Driven by his principles and conviction, Ila stated that he could no longer, in good conscience, remain affiliated with a party that compromises his fundamental values.
Following his resignation, Hon. Nasiru Baballe Ila announced his defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC). He expressed his optimism that the ADC would provide a new platform where his values and principles would be respected. Ila articulated his pleasure in aligning with a party that, after careful consideration, truly reflects his core reason for entering politics – service to humanity. He further pledged to continue advocating for “politics without bitterness,” signaling a commitment to constructive engagement despite his recent political shift.
