Political Earthquake: Enugu Governor Peter Mbah Defects to APC

Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, appears to be on the verge of a significant political shift, reportedly finalizing arrangements to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) on Tuesday, October 14, 2024. This highly anticipated move, disclosed by Dr. Ben Nwoye, the Chairman of the Enugu State APC caretaker committee, has sent ripples through the South-East political landscape, signaling potential deepening cracks within the leading opposition party.
The announcement by Dr. Nwoye followed the inauguration of his committee by the National Chairman of the APC, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, in Abuja. Governor Mbah is expected to join the APC en masse, bringing along a considerable delegation including elected national and state legislators, members of the state executive council, and numerous party leaders from ward and local government levels across Enugu State. This mass defection is viewed as a strategic step by the APC to strengthen its influence in the South-East and build a more formidable presence ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Sources indicate that a primary catalyst for Mbah's probable defection stems from the PDP's internal struggles, specifically its failure to ratify Hon. Sunday Udeh-Okoye as the South East’s chosen candidate to complete the remaining tenure of Senator Samuel Anyanwu as National Secretary. This unresolved issue has reportedly created significant friction between the party's national leadership and its South East caucus. In a communiqué issued after their South East Zonal Executive Committee (ZEC) meeting on May 14 at Government House, Enugu, the regional PDP had explicitly warned of reconsidering its relationship with the national party if the ratification was not promptly implemented. Senator Adolphus Wabara, former Senate President and Chairman of the PDP Board of Trustees, further lamented the perceived disregard for the South East PDP despite its unwavering loyalty since the party’s inception in 1998.
From the APC's perspective, Dr. Ben Nwoye articulated that Mbah's defection would mark a new chapter for Enugu State, ending a decade of the state remaining in opposition. He projected a grand reception on October 14, emphasizing the significant number of political figures joining the APC alongside the governor, including 260 ward councillors and 24 members of the House of Assembly. APC National Chairman Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, while inaugurating the caretaker committee, underscored the imperative to rebuild, expand, and refocus the party in Enugu, stressing the importance of increasing membership while nurturing existing members who have diligently contributed to the party's foundation. Yilwatda also affirmed APC's commitment to inclusiveness, ensuring equal rights and access for all members, new and old, and adherence to due process in party affairs, particularly regarding the dissolution of the state's working committee.
Reacting swiftly to the news, Debo Ologunagba, the National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, urged party members to remain steadfast and unafraid. He asserted that the PDP's foundation is strong, solid, and rooted in the people, grounded in ideas, convictions, and policies. Ologunagba highlighted the party's historical resilience, recalling past defections by high-ranking officials, including former Vice Presidents and Presidents, yet noting the party's enduring presence. He critiqued the APC's alleged tactics of intimidation, coercion, and blackmail, confidently predicting that by 2027, the APC, which he claimed was orchestrating these defections, would be seen no more. He reassured members that the PDP remains the hope of Nigerians and is moving forward with its plans, including the figurative arrival of the train for the 2025 elective convention in Ibadan.
Ultimately, Governor Mbah’s entry into the APC, following the dissolution of the Enugu State Working Committee and the appointment of a seven-member caretaker committee, is anticipated to profoundly reshape political dynamics within Enugu and across the broader South-East region. This move is expected to foster closer collaboration between the state and federal governments under the ruling party's banner, potentially ushering in a new political era for the state.
