Plateau Under Siege: Bandits Unleash Terror, Claim Lives and Homes

The Pwomol village in Heipang District of Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State was subjected to a violent attack by suspected Fulani bandits on the night of Sunday, April 5th. The incident reportedly resulted in the deaths of at least two persons and injuries to scores of others. In addition to the human casualties, houses and vital food barns were razed during the assault, intensifying the devastation on the community.
Barr. Dalyop Solomon Mwantiri, the National President of the Berom Youth Moulders-Association (BYM), officially confirmed the attack through a social media post shortly after its occurrence. He detailed that the terrorists, heavily armed with sophisticated weapons, invaded the village around midnight. They began shooting indiscriminately, leading to the immediate deaths of two youths and injuring numerous residents who were desperately attempting to escape into nearby bushes.
Mwantiri further revealed that this invasion marked the second such incident within a single week by the same group of bandits, who not only inflicted violence but also deliberately set fire to homes and food storage facilities. A significant development followed the attack when one of the alleged perpetrators, who identified himself as Suleiman, a Fulani man hailing from the Fass community in Riyom Local Government Area, was successfully apprehended.
The suspect, Suleiman, was arrested in the vicinity of the Redemption Camp, located between Heipang and Kassa. Reports indicate that bloodstains were found on his body at the time of his apprehension. He has since been handed over to security operatives and is currently held in custody at Sector 4 in Barkin Ladi LGA, awaiting further action.
In response to the tragedy, the BYM President urged security agencies to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation into the attack. He emphasized the importance of ensuring that the arrested suspect faces justice promptly and unequivocally. Mwantiri also demanded that Suleiman be compelled to provide crucial information that could lead to the identification and arrest of other individuals involved as perpetrators or collaborators in the violent incursion.
The BYM commended the swift intervention of the Special Task Force, known as Operation Enduring Peace, in the aftermath of the attack. Concurrently, the association called upon all residents of the affected area to maintain heightened vigilance and cooperate fully with security agencies. This includes promptly reporting any suspicious movements or activities observed within their communities to help prevent future occurrences and maintain peace.
