Peter Obi Clarifies Controversial Remarks to Nigerians Abroad, Dispelling Misconceptions

Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has clarified remarks he made that were allegedly misinterpreted as urging Nigerians in the diaspora to stop sending money to their relatives at home. Obi stated that his true intention was to advocate for an end to economic dependence within Nigeria, rather than instructing Nigerians abroad to abandon their families.

The former Anambra State governor faced criticism after comments he made during a town hall meeting with diaspora supporters in Manchester, United Kingdom. In a video circulated on social media, Obi was reportedly heard urging Nigerians in the UK to reconsider financial assistance to relatives and others seeking help in Nigeria, stating, “You have people at home in Nigeria today who are begging you for money. Tell them no!” He argued that while financial aid might ease immediate hardships, it would not address the fundamental governance and economic problems responsible for their difficulties. He also encouraged Nigerians abroad to motivate their relatives at home to reject financial dependence and support leaders capable of improving the economy, prioritizing productivity and economic opportunities.

However, Obi promptly issued a clarification on his verified X handle, stating that his message had been distorted by political opponents. He emphasized, “Political opponents may twist my message, but the truth remains clear: I am not asking Nigerians abroad to abandon their families. I am advocating for a Nigeria that will no longer abandon its own people.”

In his statement, titled “My Message Has Been Twisted,” Obi acknowledged and deeply appreciated the contributions of Nigerians in the diaspora, describing their financial support for families at home as deserving of profound respect. He noted that their remittances are crucial for paying school fees, hospital bills, rent, and feeding expenses. He reiterated, “I never asked them to abandon their loved ones. My concern is that Nigeria should not remain a country where millions depend on relatives abroad for basic survival.” Obi clarified that his message aimed to highlight the underlying economic conditions compelling Nigerians to rely on relatives overseas for basic necessities.

He concluded by outlining his vision for the nation: “Our goal must be to build a nation that provides jobs, affordable healthcare, quality education, and economic opportunities for its citizens.” Obi wished Nigerians at home and abroad well and called for God’s blessing on the country, insisting that his core message was about addressing the root causes of economic hardship rather than discouraging familial support.
