PDP Leadership Shake-Up: Damagum Replaced by Turaki

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) witnessed a significant transition in its leadership on Tuesday, as the immediate past National Chairman, Ambassador Illiya Damagum, formally handed over the reins to the newly constituted National Working Committee (NWC) led by Tanimu Turaki. This pivotal event took place at the Bauchi State Governor’s Lodge in Abuja and was attended by several former members of the outgoing NWC. The handover comes as the tenure of the past NWC officially concluded on December 8, amidst a backdrop of internal challenges, including an ongoing legal tussle involving the faction led by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.

In his address during the ceremony, Amb. Damagum emphasized the weighty responsibility now entrusted to the members of the new NWC. He urged them to prioritize the daunting task of unifying and reorganizing the party, which he noted had faced various obstacles. Drawing on the collective experience of the outgoing leadership, Damagum expressed confidence that their past efforts and insights would serve as an invaluable guide for the incoming NWC, helping them navigate the complex political landscape. He acknowledged that the Turaki leadership assumed office during a period marked by significant difficulties but highlighted the resilience shown by the party in overcoming previous challenges.

Ambassador Damagum articulated a strong sense of optimism regarding the future trajectory of the PDP. He firmly declared that the party's future remains bright and asserted its enduring status as "the party to beat" in Nigerian politics. According to Damagum, this inherent strength and popularity are precisely why opposing factions and parties "lose sleep about PDP" and constantly erect "different hurdles" in its path. Despite these perceived hindrances, he expressed unwavering faith, stating, "God will see us through. We are positive. God is a just God; He does not support injustice." Furthermore, Damagum issued a stern warning to those instigating crises within the party, assuring that while they might experience temporary relief, they would ultimately face the inevitable consequences of their actions.

Responding to the handover, the new head of the NWC, Tanimu Turaki, commended the immediate past National Working Committee for their dedicated efforts and contributions to the party. He acknowledged the foundation they had laid and assured all stakeholders of his unwavering commitment to continue working diligently for the advancement and success of the Peoples Democratic Party. This exchange signifies a new chapter for the PDP, with the incoming leadership tasked with steering the party through its current challenges and towards its stated goals.
