Paul Dano Breaks Silence on Tarantino Diss: 'World Spoke Up For Me!'

Actor Paul Dano has recently addressed the controversial remarks made by director Quentin Tarantino regarding his performance in Paul Thomas Anderson’s critically acclaimed 2007 film “There Will Be Blood.” Tarantino had not only expressed strong disapproval of Dano's acting but also provocatively labeled him the “weakest f***ing actor in SAG.” The topic resurfaced ahead of a 20th-anniversary screening of “Little Miss Sunshine” at the Sundance Film Festival, where Dano and his co-stars were present.

During the event, when Dano was questioned about Tarantino’s comments, his “Little Miss Sunshine” co-star Toni Collette interjected with a fervent defense. Collette vehemently stated, “Are we really going there? F*** that guy! He must’ve been high… it was just confusing. Who does that?” Dano, himself an Emmy, Golden Globe, and Indie Spirit Award nominee, had previously remained publicly silent on the matter. He shared that the outpouring of tributes and support for his work across social media had spoken volumes on his behalf. “That was really nice,” Dano told Variety. “I was also incredibly grateful that the world spoke up for me so I didn’t have to.”

Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris, the directors of “Little Miss Sunshine,” also weighed in on the controversy. Dayton characterized Tarantino’s remarks as an “embarrassment,” suggesting that the raw authenticity of Dano’s performance might have unsettled Tarantino, making it difficult for him to categorize. Faris further observed the immediate and widespread defense of Paul, highlighting that he is deeply loved and respected within the industry due to his intelligence and talent.

The firestorm originated nearly two months prior when Tarantino appeared on Brett Easton Ellis’ podcast to discuss his ranking of the best movies of the 21st century. Tarantino revealed that while “There Will Be Blood” was a strong contender for his top two picks, Dano’s performance ultimately relegated it to fifth place on his list. He controversially commented, “Obviously, it’s supposed to be a two-hander. But it’s also drastically obvious that it’s not a two-hander,” referring to Dano’s dynamic with lead actor Daniel Day-Lewis. Tarantino continued his harsh critique, calling Dano “weak sauce,” the “weak sister,” and implying Daniel Day-Lewis was "eating him alive," stating that the movie *needed* a strong foil, even if Day-Lewis didn't. He infamously added, “you put him with the the weakest f***ing actor in SAG? The limpest dick in the world?” Tarantino also extended his criticism to other actors, declaring his indifference towards Owen Wilson and Matthew Lillard.

Matthew Lillard publicly reacted to Tarantino's diss at December’s GalaxyCon, expressing genuine hurt: “it hurts your feelings. It f***ing sucks. And you wouldn’t say that to Tom Cruise. You wouldn’t say that to somebody who’s a top-line actor in Hollywood.” Tarantino’s candidness inadvertently triggered a massive wave of industry and fan support for Dano and his undeniable talents. Notably, George Clooney publicly stood by Dano, stating at an AARP awards ceremony that he “would be honored to work with” Dano and the other actors Tarantino had criticized. This robust defense underscored Dano's respected standing in Hollywood.

The 20th-anniversary screening of “Little Miss Sunshine” in Park City, Utah, marked a significant moment for the film, celebrating its remarkable success as a box office hit and Oscar winner that redefined independent film achievements. Variety continues to provide coverage from this celebratory event.
