Pastor William Kumuyi Receives World Book of Records Recognition for Global Impact
A 15-person Bible study grew into a global ministry. Now Pastor William Kumuyi has received international recognition, but his response may surprise you. Read his story.
More than five decades after beginning a small Bible study in Lagos, the Deeper Christian Life Ministry founder has been recognised for his influence in evangelism, education and humanitarian service.
When Pastor William Folorunso Kumuyi announced that he had received an inclusion letter from the World Book of Records, London, he spent little time celebrating himself.
His first response was to return attention to the mission that has defined most of his life.
“I received an Inclusion Letter from the World Book of Records, London. Humbled by this recognition, my focus remains unchanged: winning souls for Christ,” Kumuyi wrote in an August 2 social media post.
The recognition came through a letter dated June 2, 2026, placing him in the organisation’s E1 category and awarding him a Certificate of Excellence.
It acknowledged his contributions to education, visionary leadership, global outreach, humanitarian service, community development and social empowerment.
For Kumuyi, however, the honour represents the latest chapter in a journey that began far from the international crusades and global broadcasts now associated with his name.
It started with mathematics, teaching and a small gathering of people seeking a deeper understanding of the Bible.
A Teacher With a Growing Calling
Born in 1941, Kumuyi studied Mathematics at the University of Ibadan and graduated with first-class honours. He later worked as a teacher at Mayflower School before becoming a lecturer at the University of Lagos.
It was during his time at the university that his path began to change. In 1973, Kumuyi started a Bible study group with just 15 people at his official residence.
The meetings were modest, but the message spread. What began as a small gathering gradually developed into the Deeper Christian Life Ministry, which would later establish churches and outreach programmes across Nigeria and beyond.
Over the decades, Kumuyi became known for his methodical approach to biblical teaching, shaped in part by the discipline of his academic background. His sermons frequently emphasised personal holiness, spiritual discipline, evangelism and practical Christian living.
His influence eventually extended beyond the pulpit. The ministry expanded into publishing, youth development, leadership training, humanitarian outreach and formal education.
That commitment to education led to the establishment of Anchor University in Lagos, where Kumuyi serves as founder and Chancellor. The institution was created to combine academic excellence with character development and Christian values.
Taking the Message Beyond Church Walls
In recent years, the Global Crusade with Kumuyi has become one of the ministry’s most visible international programmes.The initiative uses physical gatherings, television, radio and digital platforms to reach audiences across different countries.
In announcing the World Book of Records recognition, Kumuyi said the crusade had reached more than 50 million people and recorded over 900,000 conversions within five years. The figures were presented as the ministry’s account of the programme’s impact.
The scale is far removed from the 15-person Bible study that began in Lagos more than five decades ago. Yet Kumuyi’s response suggests that he still views both moments as part of the same assignment.
“Through five years of GCK, God enabled us to reach over 50 million lives and see more than 900,000 saved,” he wrote. “All glory to God alone.”
Recognition Without a Change of Mission
The World Book of Records presents certificates and honours to individuals and organisations recognised for notable achievements and contributions in different fields. Kumuyi’s inclusion reflects the reach of his work across religion, education and social development.
But the story of the honour is not simply about receiving a certificate. It is also about the journey of a mathematics lecturer whose small Bible study grew into an international ministry.
More than 50 years after those first meetings, Kumuyi remains surrounded by larger audiences, wider platforms and international recognition. His stated priority, however, remains the same one that guided the beginning of his ministry: winning souls for Christ.
