Party stalwarts should act responsibly at polling stations - Prof Gyampo

Published 7 hours ago2 minute read

Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Shippers' Authority, Prof Ransford Gyampo, has cautioned political party officials who visit polling stations during elections to be circumspect in their utterances and conduct themselves professionally.

He made the call while contributing to discussions on TV3’s key Points on July 12, 2025, on the violence that erupted at selected polling stations at the Ablekuma North election rerun held on July 11, 2025.

His remarks was premised on reports detailing posture of some party executives, which Professor Gyampo believes directly contributes to the eruption of violence during by-elections and other political gatherings.

He specifically referenced the Ablekuma North rerun, where tensions escalated dramatically, leading to regrettable confrontations leading to the brutalisation of former MP for Ewutu Senya East and former Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture under the erstwhile Akufu-Addo administration Hawa Koomson.

A notable incident during the Ablekuma North parliamentary elections rerun saw former Hawa Koomson, and the Deputy National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party, Chris Lloyd Nii Kwei Asamoah, reportedly attacked by unidentified thugs at the Odorkor Methodist Church; a polling station of the Ablekuma North Constituency.

Professor Gyampo emphasised the critical need for party leadership to actively caution their executives against actions that could be perceived as provocative or designed to incite unrest.

He emphasised that such conduct undermines the democratic process, jeopardises the safety of citizens, and ultimately tarnishes the image of political parties.

"Party leaders must take proactive steps to ensure their executives and members understand the importance of peaceful conduct at polling stations," Professor Gyampo stated.

"Why does she carry along a pepper spray and initiate the spraying of its contents on people. It will spark some chaos knowing her history of brandishing a gun in the past. The incidents witnessed in Ablekuma North are a stark reminder of what can happen when individuals act in a manner that appears treacherous, sparking pockets of violence," he added.

Prof Gyampo’s call for restraint highlights a recurring concern in Ghana's political landscape, where electoral periods, particularly by-elections, can sometimes be marred by confrontation.
