The Parliamentary Select Committee on Defence and Interior has lauded the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) for its continued dedication to safeguarding the country’s borders and maintaining national security.

The commendation was made during a working visit by the Committee to the Service’s Headquarters in Accra. The visit formed part of the Committee’s oversight responsibility to assess the operational efficiency of the Service and identify challenges confronting its work.

Speaking to journalists after a closed-door engagement with the leadership of the Immigration Service, Chairman of the Committee, James Agalga, expressed concern over the current working space constraints at the GIS Headquarters. He assured that the Committee would advocate for the necessary support to complete the Service’s new office complex, which is under construction.

“Space is a problem. They currently share the facility with the Veterans Association of Ghana, which has made it necessary to construct a new head office behind the existing structure,” Mr. Agalga said.

“As a Committee, we will support them to complete the project in a timeous manner to enhance their performance and effectiveness.”

The Committee Chair also commended the GIS for its strategic use of technology and personnel to monitor Ghana’s borderlines, adding that the Service continues to play a crucial role in preserving the country’s territorial integrity.

“At the moment, they are taking measures to enhance their effectiveness along the border lines. Some of these include leveraging technology and deploying additional personnel on the ground,” Mr. Agalga added.

He emphasized the growing importance of the Immigration Service in addressing national security concerns, especially in light of increasing threats in the sub-region.

The Committee’s visit is part of broader efforts to strengthen collaboration with national security institutions and ensure they are well-resourced to fulfill their mandate.
