Opposition Fury: PDP Slams Tinubu's Extended Vacation & UNGA Absence
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) faction has harshly criticized President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his extended vacation in Europe and absence from the UN General Assembly, deeming it an "unacceptable abdication" of his mandate. The party cited Nigeria's ongoing challenges with insecurity and economic woes as reasons why the President should not be on leave, urging citizens to remember this for future elections. They expected him to attend the UNGA to address national issues on a global stage.
The Tanimu Turaki-led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has strongly condemned President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's prolonged vacation in Europe and his subsequent absence from the 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). The PDP faction labelled this development as an "unacceptable abdication" of his presidential mandate, expressing its position through National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Ini Ememobong, in Abuja.
The party found the Presidency’s explanation for the President’s continued absence both disappointing and insulting to the Nigerian populace. It argued that it is unacceptable for the President to remain on vacation when Nigeria is grappling with severe national challenges, including widespread insecurity, mounting economic difficulties, and a growing sense of public frustration. The PDP faction starkly stated, “No reasonable parent or caretaker goes on vacation when his house is burning,” highlighting the urgency of the national issues.
Reminding President Tinubu of his commitment upon being sworn into office, the PDP emphasized that he is the servant of the Nigerian people, who possess the legitimate right to scrutinize his decisions and demand accountability. The party questioned the rationale behind the President taking a vacation at a time when insecurity is consistently on the rise, macroeconomic indicators are bleak, and citizens are daily confronted with renewed hopelessness.
President Tinubu initially departed Abuja on August 30 for what was described as a three-week annual leave in Europe, commencing in London. The Presidency characterized this as a working vacation, with expectations for his return to Nigeria to resume official duties and participate in preparations for the January 2027 election. He later traveled to Paris, where he engaged with French President Emmanuel Macron and businessman Vincent Bolloré. However, the Presidency announced on Monday that his stay had been extended by a few days, with his return now anticipated at the weekend.
The PDP expressed its expectation that the President would have proceeded directly from Europe to the United States to attend the UNGA. The party underscored that this international gathering presents a crucial opportunity for Nigeria to engage with other world leaders on the country’s pressing challenges and seek necessary international support and cooperation. Ememobong reiterated, “Since he went on holiday in Europe, it was expected that he would proceed from there to America for UNGA, unarguably, the biggest gathering of world leaders.”
The party further criticized the Presidency’s dismissive attitude towards Nigerians demanding accountability for the President’s absence, asserting that citizens are well within their rights to question how the presidential mandate is being discharged. The PDP urged Nigerians to carefully observe these developments, suggesting they should inform their choices at the ballot box in the forthcoming 2027 presidential election and influence their assessment of the responsibilities expected from the nation's President.
