OpenAI Releases GPT-4.1 and GPT-4.1 Mini

OpenAI has launched two new artificial intelligence models, GPT-4.1 and GPT-4.1 mini, within ChatGPT. This announcement was made in a post on X on Wednesday, May 15, 2025. GPT-4.1 is reported to perform better than GPT-4o in areas such as coding and instruction following, while also offering improved speed. It is currently available to users with ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Team plans. GPT-4.1 mini is being rolled out to both free and paid users.
With the introduction of these new models, OpenAI is removing GPT-4.0 mini from ChatGPT for all users. The models were initially introduced in April via OpenAI's API, primarily used by developers. At that time, OpenAI faced criticism from AI researchers for not releasing a safety report for GPT-4.1, leading to concerns about the company's transparency regarding its models' workings.
OpenAI responded to these concerns by stating that GPT-4.1 is not a frontier model and, therefore, does not require the same level of safety reporting. Johannes Heidecke, OpenAI’s Head of Safety Systems, clarified that GPT-4.1 does not introduce new modalities or surpass o3 in intelligence, thus presenting different safety considerations compared to frontier models.
In addition to the new models, OpenAI has launched a “Safety Evaluations Hub,” a dedicated webpage that monitors the performance of its models against key safety benchmarks. This hub will be updated with major model releases and aims to provide ongoing visibility into model safety metrics. OpenAI aims to share its progress in developing more scalable ways to measure model capability and safety, supporting community efforts to increase transparency in the field.
